Default Dishonored - New IP by Arkane Studios - 07-07-2011, 20:26 | posts: 1,456

Arkane Studios, makers of such great games as Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, are backed by Bethesda Softworks publishing their new IP "Dishonored".

Here's a first glimpse of the article, courtesy of GameInformer:

Quote:
Arkane Studios and founder Raf Colantonio have made memorable games in the past (Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic) that ultimately suffered from a lack of publisher support. Bethesda Softworks believes in their vision and is giving them all the time, money, and development help (regular meetings with guys like The Elder Scrolls' Todd Howard don't make your game worse) they need. Harvey Smith, one of the main minds behind the first two Deus Ex games and a legendary veteran of game development, shares the vision and is on board as Dishonored's co-creative director along with Colantonio. Viktor Antonov designed Half-Life 2's iconic City 17 and is lending his talents to Dishonored's world. This is a perfect storm for creating a game that shatters the mold that first-person action games have built for themselves in the mainstream...

Keep in mind that the artwork linked in the article is an old concept draft from Half-Life 2, not from Dishonored.

I must say it sounds very promising, even at these early stages... they have some very talented people working on it, lets hope for the best!

I don't know if I'd call Dark Messiah a great game. It was interesting and had some cool ideas but it wasn't executed well.
I hope its good though. Sounds cool.

Sweet. They tend to nail "atmostpheric" games IMO.

I'm still waiting for an Arx Fatalis sequel, or something at least similar. This sure doesn't sound like it, but I guess it could, maybe... almost be interesting.

I love this studio. They create very good games. Dark Messiah was a very good game. I really enjoy it playing with different characters. And I heard very good comments for Arx Fatalis. Never manage to play it though.

This concept art reminds me of Half-life 2...armored train car design, armored car, weird stalker/ATST walker thing, floating combinish head, government messages. The only thing that's new are the rats lol. We get those for free. I'm a Arkane Studios fan, btw.

^u sure? Why would they put an old concept art on the cover which has nothing to do with the game? I mean they must have tons of concepts lying around.

Was this confirmed by a dev?

Yeah but you'd expect that Antonov guy to do something more than just add rats. Maybe this one will finally get the moving trams...

wasn't executed well?

For hand-to-hand combat, it was, and still is IMO the best executed game out there, nothing i've played has done better

Mix Oblivions environment and DarkMessiahs combat system and you'd have the best action RPG ever.

Seems Arkane's project "The Crossing" is put on hold even longer. I know they originally put it on hold for financial reasons, then did level design work on BioShock 2.

I was wondering if they were getting back to The Crossing, but seems that they aren't. Instead doing a brand new game. Interesting decision.

It's actually pretty much cancelled. There is a nice report about the game here (but it's in german)
http://www.gamestar.de/spiele/the-cr...0,2318959.html

They do say though they want to get back on that crossplay-mode idea

Ahh..
Last I had heard was it had been "postponed" due to financial issues. Which is why they opted for level design in BioShock 2 and such.

OMFG! That screenie has just made we really really want this game. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was an awesome game if you ask me. It was one of the first games where the environment actually played a role in the combat system, a lot more so than anything I had seen or played previously. The combat, and leveling system was well executed too. However, I thought the game would of been better as a free roam RPG much like Oblivion instead of levels which kind of ruined it a little for me.

I hope the story and settings are as original as say, BioShock Infinite is looking. If they can nail that and make this game more open world like then count me in!
