Im on the look out for a new phone soon as my contract comes to an end soon, atm ive got a Tocco ultra on T-mobile "i know naff network".
Whats all the talk about Android? and whats all the rage about 2.2 or 2.3 gingerbread, whats the difference? and can all 2.2 phones be upgraded and what makes android special?
Atm i get 600 mins and unlimited txts for about £27.00. so dont really want to go over £30 if i can help it.
I would like a phone preferably with a qwerty keypad and amazing predictive txt, tocco ultra is the worst ever, my old motorola razer had the best by far in my experiance.
A good camera with HD video recording with night view would be nice. or even better 3D camera and playback like the LG one.
Is one gig internet data a month any good and does anyone ever use it all on a phone web surfing and youtube or will i need more?
Built-in satnav with google maps or google earth if possible?
And good coverage in the UK.
If i think of anything else i would like in a phone i will add it to this post.

2.2 froyo is the first android OS that officially supports abode flash(But only on armv7 cpus, which most mid-high end devices have), as well as googles JIT(Just in time compiler) that gives a great performance boost. 2.2 and 2.3 does have some differences, but nothing life changing. For example, Android 2.3 Gingerbread's default format is ext4, which has also shown to give a performance boost for Android seeing that ext4 is a default linux format. 2.3 also has a few other changes and a few new app updates.
Now, updating from 2.2 to 2.3. This is where Android has one of it's problems, fragmentation. Since Android is open source, it is up to the carrier and the manufacturer of the phone to provide updates unless it's a google experience device like Nexus one, Nexus S, or Motorola Xoom. In the case of Google Experience devices, Google provides the updates. There are some devices that have 2.2 and get a 2.3 officially, but then there are some that aren't because of hardware limitations, or just neglect. The HTC Desire is a great example!
HTC Desire runs the same platform that other high end devices ran at the time, a 65nm Snapdragon 1ghz arm v7 neon a8 base cpu with Adreno 200 gpu. HTC used this in a lot other devices, such as the Evo, the Incredible, Nexus One, hd2, and their WP7 devices. However, the Desire in terms of actual hardware is probably the lowest out of all them, seeing the Desire has the least amount of Ram and Rom. Because of this, HTC first decided that Gingerbread was too big for the Desire, but then took back that statement and to give more room on the device, some carriers are even taking off HTC's user interface replacement for Android known as Sense! The HD2 which originally runs Windows Mobile, even has a fully working Gingerbread sense build on it. With that being said, there are communities that make their own roms, fixes, and updates for devices. XDA developers is the biggest one, known for Android, Windows Mobile, WP7, even Ios development now. Problem with this, custom roms require root access to the system, which puts out any type of warranty for your device. But when there are already Gingerbread sense roms created and working on the Desire, well there's the advantage to open source right there!
Now, for what you want there isn't a whole lot. The only one I can think of coming soon with decent specs and qwerty, is the Motorola Droid 3(GSM version is Milestone 3). But, here are the top performance devices now.

qhd atm means well... jack all... can't see one advantage of it. the s2 resolution is more than enough. it's super crisp. and the colors/viewing angles are out of this world.

This is just my opinion, but i think the screen on the evo 4g looks alot sharper than any of the other phones i was trying out. But unfortunately verizon dont offer that phone. The thunderbolt an exceptional phone but sometimes i think the screen looks a bit grainy at times.

yeah, a couple of my mates have the DHD and said it was so so. a bit laggy. the s2 is a monster, seriously so snappy. some of the games on it are mindblowing. I mean they look better than ps2 games (riptide). I'm also really happy with android market (first time android user coming from symbian and blackberry). all in all it's a great phone and even my iphone mates are blown away with it. they want one

Luckily the OP is in the UK so we have the freedom to use whatever phone we want on whatever network we want.

The DHD was fine (apart from the problems) for my dad but he doesn't game so wouldn't have noticed that, but he said even just flicking between pictures is much faster etc. And the screen is fantastic.

thats one of the things i wish would happen here, but unfortunately it never will. at&t and sprint have some really nice phones. but unless you unlock the phone, thatll be the only way you can use it on different carriers. even then it sometimes has its own issues.

LG optimus 2x doesnt run a ti omap setup. it runs a tegra 2. its also still running froyo 2.2, at least until july (same with the atrix, gingerbread in july).
the main improvement in gingerbread for the tegra 2 devices comes in the form of updated drivers for the ulp geforce. the performance improvements range from 10-30% which is handy for the atrix and its higher resolution display (this is from the gingerbread beta testers on xda devs).
cant remember where i read this, but there are also some UI improvements in gingerbread, as well as adding dual core support to more of the core apps.

Whoops, my bad about the optimus. It's the Thrill that runs the dual core tiomap.
