Default SmartDoctor causing micro stutter - 05-27-2011, 12:14 | posts: 229 | Location: USA

So here i have been using SmartDoctor for over a year to overclock my 5850s. One prime example I have always wondered about was in 3DMark11.. During the tests they would be smooth, then jerk jerk... Then be smooth again, then again do a little stutter step. Now it never did this with Crossfire turned Off leading me to believe i was having issues of some kind with crossfire itself.

Well I got sick of messing with SmartDoctor as it takes a while to boot up and not always keeps the correct voltage settings. Looking around I found out how to get Afterburner working with my ASUS 5850s. Now i can only go up 100mv but thats enough for 935mhz and thats fine for me.

Anyways ever since i switched to Afterburner I have no more stutter in any games or 3dmark11 for that matter. I always thought it was a bug with crossfire but this whole damn time it has been SmartDoctor doing god knows what in the background.

I never would of thought SD was causing that. So glad its gone. Frames are so much more stable and feels much more fluid.

Never again will i touch that program.

Hi there. I have found that the issue you've described lies in one particular setting within Smart Doctor. It's accessible in Settings>Settings tab>Monitor Settings>Monitor polling time interval. It can be set to ranges between 5 seconds to 1 minute.

I've ran an FPS benchmark to see what is causing the problem. And it happens accordingly to the time setting that is set. So if you set it to 5 sec. -- you'll have a micro stutter every 5 sec. etc. Although I haven't checked exactly yet what the option is (I have just discovered the problem and found this thread googling it) -- I know that it's responsible for the temp readings that SmartDoctor is getting from the Video Card. And it's a bit tricky -- because if you set it on 1 minute and have SmartCooling on -- your FAN speed will only increase/decrease once every minute according to the reading.

The option that cause the stuttering cannot be disabled (or at least not in this particular setting). If anyone have found a way to get rid of that temp reading that cause the stuttering and is able to run SmartDoctor without it, or have found alternative OC/FAN speed/temp control software (except the previously mentioned Afterburner) that works with Asus video cards -- please share.
