Default Where can I find the MJPG codec used for video capture? - 05-18-2011, 09:50 | posts: 3

Hi all,

Have been really enjoying myself with the Afterburner Beta video capture function: it produces fantastic results! - Really good when I run a heavy application such as the new flight sim called Il-2: Cliffs of Dover.

However, now that I try to edit the video captures in Sony Vegas, the avi-files don't show up correctly. Only sound, no images.

I guess it is because I need the MJPG codec that Afterburner is using. Do you have any idea where I can find it?

(I guess that this question goes specifically to Unwinder, but if anybody else knows, you're welcome to chime in!)

PS: some of my flight sim vid caps are here: http://www.youtube.com/user/wwwDOTda...1CBC682E928D2A

had the exact same problem , and still have, politely asked the devs for a solution or workaround and they politely , not that much , told me to forget it...

i use fraps now, like i always did, also tryed on my own ,obviously , to find a solution but there isnīt any , only hope is that vegas devs start supporting the codec or AB devs give the option to use a diferent codec , since i was told it was too much work to do it by the AB devs one can only hope vegas will come trhough someday.

No need to lie, boy. You've got two suggestions:

1) Contact Sony Vegas support if you're legal owner of the product, because it is up to video editor application to support different video formats properly.
2) Use alternate commercical or free video editing tools, which support standard Motion-JPEG format out of box (e.g. Adobe Premiere or excellent and free Windows Movie Maker Live).

You ignored both because you're using illegal copy of Sony Vegas and don't want to use Movie Maker because "telling me to use moviemaker instead of vegas is the same as telling me to eat tuna when i want to eat caviar.". So blame yourself and don't say that devs didn't give you any solution.
As for your original recommendations to "include third party codec instead of MJPEG", you seem to completely fail to understand that Afterburner doesn't use any external codecs and uses its own effective mutithreaded compressor seriously tuned for minimal FPS loss during recording. So the suggestion you're offering is completely insane and it means MONTHS of work.
I could tolerate such crap in your PMs, but if you try to bring the same stuff in public threads, you'll quicky say good bye to this forum, sorry. Take it as a final warning.

But can't I just drop the codec (wherever it resides) into a Vegas codec folder?

I mean, the capture videos can be played just fine with VLC and Windows Media Player.

Thx for the recommendations re: other video editors Unwinder.

No ideas, it's a question to be asked in Vegas support forum.

They can be played just fine in the majority of software players because Motion-JPEG is an open video compression standard, widely used in different video cameras and all hardware video players. So it is embedded in OS and doesn't require third party codecs installation to be playable. That's the reason why it is selected as primary compression format for MSI Afterburner.
And talking about missing Motion-JPEG support in Vegas, once again, it is a qeustion to be asked and addressed on Vegas side.

dunno why youīre so upset , i asked you answered and that was it , yes you were a bit harsh in the sense you didnīt quite explained wjat you did here , you just said no and told me to use a very limited software instead of a very good one , that wasnīt very helpful and ignoring that fact was what i considered to be less polite.

besides i didnīt recomend anything , i politely asked if that was even a possibility, since you clearly stated it was not the conversation ended there ,
and yes i completly fail to understand how AB records cause im no software engineer , dont assume people know everything you do when giving out answers, thatīs why we ask things.

isnīt it? i fail to see why this obvious statement upsets you so much , and beeing a legal owner of vegas or not doesnīt changes anything about the truth of that statement so i dont see the point of you coming out so loud and clear that im not a legal vegas owner , its simply irrelevant to the matter at hands, and on top of that you dont know it for a fact.

but no hard feelings.

Let me Ask you something. IF there is a Fuel Station which provides only diesel. Somebody gave you a new care which runs on gasoline. What are you gonna do ? Bring the car back, or ask the gasoline station if the maybe would provide diesel in the future? oh.... wait... you cant ask them because you're staying illegal in this country. So it's definitly the Car's fault!

The only thing i realy hate about MJPG is that it isn't supportet by Youtube. If i upload videos directly

Well, it does... but only up to 1920x1080 Pixel.... at 5760*1080 pixel it's getting green. and every converter i've tried up until now also makes it Green. Click on "Original" Size and you'll understand ^^
(Only converted video, or youtube, on PC with VLC it works perfect!)

Also Recording this big size is Working! Fraps wont... I think if i had i7- 2600K would work better than on a Dual Core. It's all CPU work right?

Default MJPG from cheap 'spy' glasses - 02-23-2012, 15:59 | posts: 1

Hello,

I've got a cheap pair of video sunglasses off eBay, they came direct from China, so support is pitiful.

They seem to work ok, they record audio, take photos, and they record an AVI file for video... but nothing seems to play it correctly. I get sound but just a black screen for video. I have the K-Lite mega codec pack installed (latest version from 2/15), and I've run it through the media info tool. It show's its a valid MJPG file with audio & video.

I've even tried converting it to uncompressed AVI using VirtualDub... with the same end result: audio, no video.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Bill

I found a fix for MJPG Files and Vegas 8,9,10 and 11 not showing up the image (blank video)!

Just install the CODEC PACK (CCC Pack) and the MJPG Decoder that I uploaded in the link below and it should work fine! Tested in many situations here...

I've make most scenes of this video in MJPG:

All you need to do is:

1) Install ffdshow-tryouts (x64 if your Vegas is 64-bit).

2) Enable MJPEG decoding from ffdshow's Video for Windows (VFW) settings:
Start > All Programs > ffdshow > VFW configuration > Codecs

EDIT: Don't go to any one of:
  • Audio decoder configuration;
  • DXVA Video decoder configuration; nor
  • Video decoder configuration
Go to VFW configuration!

For format "MJPEG", select codec "libavcodec" instead of "disabled".
3) Restart Vegas.

You shouldn't blindly install codec packs. They needlessly bloat your system. If/when something goes wrong, removing them completely may or may not work.

I've done this and no go for me... My solution does not work as well, I tested with an uncompressed video by mistake instead of using a MJPG one...

I CANNOT get this damn thing to WORK!!!

I have tried installing K-Lite codec Pack x32 and x64.
I have tried installing mjpegcodecv3.2.4.exe the MJPEG decoder (This was the only thing that changed what I was seeing in Vegas. Instead of a black screen, I was seeing a green screen)
I have tried installing m3jpegV3.99.114.x64.exe
I have tried installing Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2011-11-11
I have tried using the corrected aviplug.dll file

I've verified that MJPEG is set to libavcodec in the settings.

NONE OF THIS works. What now? Just kill myself?

I use Windows 7 Home Prem, Sony Vegas 10 Platinum 32bit (I believe it's 32 bit. It installed to Program Files(x86) folder)

EDIT: Holy **** it works. Turns out nobody said before that I need to set MJPEG to libavcodec in the VFW Configuration, not just the video decoder configuration. Did this and it works now. BOOYAW. Thanks guy above that said you only need ffdshow!

for anyone else that can't get this to work, MAKE SURE you set it to libavcodec in the VFW CONFIGURATION menu. You have to actually click "CODEC" at the top left, then change it. It's not there by default.

I got MJPEG to work (with ffdshow) the first time I tried it.

Just do exactly as I wrote above: you need to change the Video for Windows (VFW) settings in
Start menu>ffdshow>VFW configuration,
there are other settings as well but those won't affect Vegas. I have:
Audio decoder configuration
DXVA Video decoder configuration
Video decoder configuration
Ignore those and go for the VFW configuration!
