I think my computer hates me. -

So first the GPU dies, replacement arrives today, all happy I am, I install it, boot up, it boots, wee, however, I got some kind of Boot Sector error and I check out one of my SATA connectors for some reasons smells burnt and is kinda busted up looking, so I use a spare and the HDD boots up, but it seems the OS has been wiped clean(Though all the other stuff is still there!)
So yeah, if it's nto one thing, it's the other. This computer just WANTS to break down.
On a side note, the 470 runs cooler than my 280 did @ 100% fan-speed.

I think all our computers hates us eventually because of what we do to it
Anyways, joking aside, have you tried replacing the SATA cable? As for the OS wiped clean, as in the whole OS is gone? or it's corrupted? If it's a corruption, just stick a Windows 7 DVD and do a system recovery to see if you can get the installer to reinstall the core Windows files...

I did a system recovery, but it said it didn't detect Windows at all.
I already installed over it again, my second re-install in one week, before it was just because, but now ugh.
Yeah, I replaced the SATA cable, but it's scary to think what would have caused that to happen. It smelt like it was burnt.

Weird, SATA cables don't tend to do that. I did have a SATA cable failure but it didn't burn or anything though.

Maybe the PSU has eroded a bit through the use of your rig. PSUs do lose capacity through the years.

Yeah, I read they lose like 5-10w a year, so it worries me a little.
However, I can't afford a new PSU, they're like 90$ for a decent one.
UNless anyone wants to donate me one? Lol, I'm going to have to stay with this one.

Ya, true ... I guess you have to wait it out ... it could maybe just have been the cable being faulty and caused this mishap ... not sure.

This is what I was planning to get if I had some cash lying around for it, but I don't.
I mean if I buy a PSU, it wouldn't be a temp one. 600w is nice, but I wanna be able to use it in my next rig also...so yeah.

I know this is quite obvious, but I would just say: time to save up.
There's many stuff I want that's backlogging right now (a new case so it can fit a new GPU that needs to replace my barely struggling with BFBC2 Radeon HD 4850 lol). If I want something now, I would have to eat into my "just-in-case my system f**ks up fund" and that would well be disasterous if my computer does implode and I don't have cash to rebuild it so I get a running machine...

You may be right.
Something else very scary just happened to me.
I decided to run this one Benchmark one last time. Ran fine before, as did many others after it.
I walk over and bump into my chair, which kinda hits the ground hard abit, and suddenly I see a spark come from my freaking case! Or at least, what I believe was a spark, it came fast, was white, but it could have been something else. My comp shut itself down.
I re-checked all the wires and they are all snug as a bug...
What the heck could cause that? I OC'ed my GPU below what most people did on their 470, so I thought I'd be fine.
My temps were also like 60c, well within reason(Some people run these @ 85c!)
It seems that my good Karma of getting a GTX470 has lead to an equal amount of bad Karma coming .
Well, I guess this just means this old rig has seen her final days.

4850 is ok for bc2, on mine all settings high, hsao on, 4x aa, vsync off, +50fps.
Also wires from corsair will take alot space and it will mess.

I can't reach that high and I need vsync because screen tearing gives me headaches.
I'm on low-medium at 1680x1050 w/ AA off and HSAO off w/ vsync on.

Sounds like it's time for a new PSU or RMA it if it's still within warranty ... though questionable since BFG doesn't exist anymore.

Im a bit worried though for him too. I had the same PSU as him and ditched it pretty quickly. My pc would randomly shut down. Was only running one dvdrw, two hds, 8800gts 512, and x2 5000. Never had an issue after that.
As for the Pirating with not having a job. I only do it try a game that does not have a demo. I have been laid off 4 times since 2008. I have been jobless since sep 2010. I could not afford to try and buy a game that I ended up not liking. i really do buy games that I like and feel they are worth purchasing. I just delete them and move on. I understand where MkilBride is coming from. Where I live if u dont have a car, its near impossible to work. I just got a car from school money and taxes. But it still needed work. Its now just running, and looking for work. So DeathSpank, you shouldnt always jump to conclusions.
When my bfg 8800gts 512 died I got screwed because they went under. No warranty, no job at the time before I built this pc. I had to go back to a 7800gt.

Ye, today I went to OCZ's Toronto office and got my power supply exchanged. The specs calls for 2 PCIe power adapters but my PSU only had 1. The technician was like ... I'm gonna give you an upgrade.
I'm like ... w00t, free upgrade.
Now I have the ModXStream Pro 500W instead of my old StealthXStream 500W. I thought they were just going to give me the StealthXStream V2 500W instead but nope .
