I am wondering if anyone can assist with this situation. Without getting into major detail, here is the situation that I require help with. A friend works at a firm where employees have access via a server for various shared files etc. This friend is being harrassed by certain other employees and one of the employees has his brother, who is a tech guy, do the work on the office computers/server. Not a very professional or confidential environment. This individual has keys to the office and can obviously set certain restrictions and or view things on anyones computer or set it up so others can do the same. This friend believes that certain individuals have this access and have some form of access to her computer. Certain files she was working on disappeared. I am looking for a way to restrict access to this computer so others can't get in, or even better monitor who might be accessing this computer. That would be a bonus. This friend had certain administrator privileges in case the office manager was away however that suddenly changed a few days ago. When she emailed the Tech person to re-set her privileges he stated he didn't understand her question. I am not a techie and I understood the question. Any help assistance would be appreciated. Regards.

First you need to consult with the company's user and security policy ... each company has different policies ... since this is an office environment, all the machines are under management's jurisdiction and if you change something on the machine that may violate company policy, your friend might get into hot water and may face employment termination depending on situation.

    Best to consult the policy.

EDIT: some jurisdictions like Canada makes it illegal for companies to enter the office-owned machine if it's someone's machine that's only used by a single employee. This precedence was set earlier during the year when a child pornography case was tossed out in the courts because the company accessed the person's laptop without a court order even though the laptop is owned by the company on the grounds of privacy invasion.

The company doesn't have much of a policy when it has the brother of one of the employees as their tech support person. Conflict of interest I would say. Everyone thinks the guy does a stellar job however no company should ever allow a tech guy acces to the building and the server and computers and passwords and can get in any time of the day or night or weekends. He can set his brother up to have unlimited access to any other employees computer. There should be a way to lock access to the computer so that no one would have access to the files on the hard drive. I was thinking of an encrytion software for confidential files.

You can disable Network Sharing assuming your friend has admin control of her machine...

If they were to disbale network access would they still have access to shared files on the server that she must use? On Friday last she had Administrator privileges on the server and then over the weekend she has read only. She sometimes has to fill for the office manager when they are away and she would require this access but it was misteriously removed. It appears some individuals were given full access to her computer; she changed that and then over the weekend lost the privileges. The people granted access have no need to have full access to her files. The office manager isn't even given Administrator priviliges and has to call the Tech guy to come and make changes. This is the brother of another employee. That's just not right! Borders on harrasement.

Wow, what a mismanaged tech set up, well you need to tell the tech to restore it.

You should program the Windows firewall to disable ports 137 - 139, that will kill all Windows file sharing.

That's a good question you have there on discussion about employee internet monitoring.
First and foremost what you need to do is consult your manager or your boss regarding this
matter and also consult with the company's user and security policy for any violation.
