Cool New GAMING / HTPC Build and Need the GURU Community's Advice! - 03-02-2011, 06:22 | posts: 158 | Location: Miami

I am planning on building a new gaming rig within the next couple of weeks, but before I do, as always, I'd like to check with the GURU community before I shell out $1400 on parts! In this thread, I will outline the hardware I plan on buying and the goals I have for this new system. I am open to any constructive criticism! If you would like to suggest a piece of hardware, please briefly explain why and what advantages it would offer over my current hardware choices. Also, if you see any incompatibilities, please point them out!

I game HEAVILY on my PC. I mostly play FPS games and am preparing myself for the crop of games due out in 2011! My goal is to be able to play games at full 1080p and MAX settings with at a MINIMUM of 50 FPS. Max Settings: Meaning, the highest texture details and full AA and AF. The games I plan on playing with this build include: Brink, Homefront, Crysis 2, Portal 2, Deus Ex, Rage, Tom Clancy Future Soldier, BF3 (ESPECIALLY), etc.

I want to be able to OC my CPU to 4.1+ GHZ per core and flash the 6950 to a 6970. In a month or so I will add another 6950 in CrossfireX and flash that one to a 6970 as well.

Specs:

GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-4GBXM
2 x RAID 0 Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16
BFG Tech EX-1000 1000W ATX12V 2v.2/EPS12V v2.91
Antec Six Hundred Black Computer Case

Can the 6950 Flashed to a 6970 be paired in CrossfireX with another 6950 Flashed to a 6970? Will 2 Sapphire 6950's fit in the Antec Six Hundred Case?

If you guys have any suggestions or comments please feel free. As always, thank's in advance to the community for participating!

Where are you getting the parts from? Also, I think it'll make more sense to wait for Bulldozer due end of April.

i dont understand are this used parts or parts u already own or a combination of parts u already own and new parts?
can you still get BFG products?

on to topic i think its a good system. should meet your goals, and no there should not be a problem with crossfiring those.

on a more personal taste. i would choose intel over amd but thats just cause im an intel whore.

and id choose an nvidia card most likely a 560ti or higher, this because i find
3d and physx to be a must and well im already more familiarized with NV drivers.

anywho; its your build and like i said before. it should meet your goals.

I'm planning to buy all of these parts from Newegg.
