Default 1-minute freeze at startup - 02-11-2011, 10:52 | posts: 8

Hello,

I'm using ATT only to lower the fan speed of my ATI 4650 and it works great. However, installing ATT causes this problem: after the Windows logon screen, the desktop appears, I can move the mouse and select things, but nothing is executed. If I open a text file, nothing happens. After about a minute, Windows completes the boot normally, the text file will open etc.
Tried ATT 1.6.9.1481 and 1.7.9.1537. Installed ATI drivers 10.11 and removed CCC before installing ATT. Tried both Registry/Startup menu load options and disabled ATT OSD.
Is there something else I can try? Thank you.

Using Windows 7 x64, relatively fresh installation with no problems and Outpost Security Suite as firewall/antivirus.

There seems to be a conflict with the firewall/antivirus (OSS). Completely disabling it, solves the problem. However, adding ATT to all OSS's exclusion lists doesn't solve it. There is a problem running them both together, since it looks like OSS halts everything for a while before allowing ATT to run.

Use Process Lasso, it may show what is causing the problem.
When a process hogs the system, process lasso tries to restore the systems responsiveness by reducing the processes priority.
It shows this graphically and logs the time any process has had its priority reduced.

Excellent little tool, gives a lot of realtime info in a small package.

Thanks a lot Mufflore, PL has 'magically' solved the boot problem! From the PL log:

16:34:30.576,atitray.exe,2616,Process priority temporarily lowered,The process may have been affecting system responsiveness.
16:34:53.898,atitray.exe,2616,Restored original process priority,The process has quit affecting system responsiveness.

Had to reinstall ATT (1.6.9.1486 which works for me) and problem reappeared. Process Lasso only helps in 1 out of 10 startups now...

It sounds like your Windows is poorly.

Run SFC /scannow (as admin) at a command prompt to verify Windows files.

The scan was ok. Since this is a conflict between ATT and OSS, I solved it by disabling automatic OSS startup, and setting it to a 10-sec delayed start with the Task Scheduler. ATT now loads before OSS with no problems. The soon to be released Startup Delayer 3 should take care of similar problems, even more neatly.
