Default Performance Boost - 08-02-2002, 09:51 | posts: n/a

I have a Geforce 4 MX 440 - just so you know - I don't know much about these settings - but i wanna know more about it =). Anyways, I was wondering what v.sync actually does... and whats the S3TC fix do? ... I want to boost my fps in a Half-Life mod. - I tried to turn off vsync and that gave me a constant 100 fps - normally I get around 55 constant... but the quality worsened when I turned. I left vsync off for now... but I still want to boost my 55 constant fps to around 80+ constant fps while I dont have a signifigant quality drop.

I'd be happy if I could turn off vsync while not having my screen flicker when I turn to the side...well that's all - thanks for reading post - respond if you can help me please =)

Hi,

S3TC fix dont have any effect on Half-Life, but on some games (QuakeIII engine games, Serious Sam, ....) may improve visual quality.

V-Sync - because you disable vertical synchronization with monitor's refresh rate, you have screen flicker problem. You have more fps than monitors refresh rate. So enable V-Sync - 55fps is good value.

From MS DX SDK Documentation (tearing is same problem in DX and OpenGL)

-----------------------------------------
Tearing:

A visual artifact produced when the screen refresh rate is out of sync with an application's frame rate. The top portion of one frame is displayed at the same time as the bottom portion of another frame, with a discernible tear between the two partial images.
-----------------------------------------

So, if you have 100Hz on your monitor and 100fps with V-sync disabled, isn't it possible disabling this flicker (tearing).
