Default Extended Desktop + Overclocking = Desktop/Game Distortion - 12-15-2010, 02:42 | posts: 186

Hello Guys.

Hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

I have 3 monitors, 20x24x20 in Extended Desktop mode.
Now when i apply Overclocking with MSI Afterburner, I get desktop and game distortion.
EG: Open My Computer and move it around the screen, i see black lines and flickering.

If I disable the 2 20inch screen, overclocking works fine. No distortion from both desktop or gaming.

I believe it might be driver related (ATI 10.12) but several drivers have replicated the same issue other than the default windows video driver.

Any ideas guys? or at least seen/read about it somewhere.

Cheers, and have a great xmas all

Hi Altra I have a very similar problem with the exception that I have my main monitor extended to only one monitor that is not the same brand or resolution. I believe the issue with the flickering is the gpu idle speed which for me is 157 on the core and 300 on the memory. I have heard this time and time again that those speeds as I have listed are not enough to cover more than one monitor so what we end up experiencing are the annoying black lines and flickering.

Also I have no problems with the weird lines and flickering when using 1 monitor just like you even if I overclock.

I just installed the 10.5 drivers and these seem to have higher idle clocks at, 400 gpu and 1200 mem. ( the good thing is even with a overclock you retain these nice idle speeds with the 10.5 drivers however if you overclock the memory 1200+ that will be the new idle speed. That is what I discovered with my setup.) I have a 5870 as my main display graphics card though so your results on the speeds could be different then mine with the 10.5 drivers.

EDIT: I almost forgot, you will see a increase in temperatures if you use the 10.5 drivers because higher Idle speeds = more heat!
Also what I have noticed even with the 10.5 drivers if I play a youtube video my memory speed will drop to 900 for that period of time until I leave the youtube page and then I will see a brief flicker or black line but it does not stay for very long.
You have a great Christmas too Altra.

Thanks for the info SureFire. Your a LEGEND.

With the info you provided me I ran a google (Yeah, my best friend )

This backs up your thoughts and comments, but also provides a workaround with the latest drivers beyond 10.5

Steps:

1. Open CCC

2. Unlock and Enable Overdrive if they aren’t already.

3. Go to Options/Profiles/Profiles Manager. Create a new profile. Under composition make sure “ATI Overdrive” is checked. Save and Close, DO NOT ACTIVATE.

4. In windows go to: C:\Users\{yourusername}\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Prof iles (you will need to have “show hidden files” turned on for this)

5. Open the xml document with the name of the profile you just created (notepad is fine)

6. Change the values of the Clock and Memory speeds to look like this (these specific values are what worked for me and my card, use judgment) EDIT ONLY THE BOLD VALUES.

Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0"

Property name="Want_0" value="40000"

Property name="Want_1" value="60000"

Property name="Want_2" value="85000"

Feature

Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0"

Property name="Want_0" value="90000"

Property name="Want_1" value="90000"

Property name="Want_2" value="120000"

7. Save and close. Go back to CCC and activate the profile you just created.

This will make the card idle at 400core, 900memory. (2D clocks are the "Want_0" values)

I will try this out tonight and let ya know if it works.
