Does the GTX260 (1.8GB version) have any direct competition?

Ok i have had my current setup for almost a Half of a year now, and i still dont know exactly what my PC can actually do

more importantly my GTX 260 causes me some confusion..

my GTX260 IS NOT the standard 896MB variation of the model, Its the 1.8GB model (this in itself was a confusing quality untill i found out they actually made the 1.8GB version for HP

(my card however is NOT the GTX260 216)



to sum it all up so far:

*we know my specific GTX260's memory size is 1.8GBs nearly twice the amount of the original (standard) GTX260

*Its not the GTX260 216sp - or whatchyumackalllit

BUT I still dont know much about it......
here are my biggest questions::

What other Cards can directly, (and fairly) compare to my GTX260 1.8GB card?

What games can my card play that use it to the fullest?

why cant i play DX10.1 games but i can play DX10 games just fine?

and my last question......

Who on GURU3D.COM can say they have almost the exact same setup?

Unless you game at 2560x1600 or higher a 1.8GB card is no better than the standard 896MB version.

In fact since it's only 192SP it's not really good at all in comparison to the 216SP.

That said, the 260 is still a great card and will play pretty much everything at high or a mix of medium and high details, even with a small bit of AA. It also overclocks fairly well.

As for DX10.1....the card just doesn't support it...it only supports as far as DX10.

look at the difference between my card and yours....isnt that crazy?


I can play dirt 2 in DX9.0c (no dx10 mode) at a maximum of 1280x1024 (max my monitor will allow) at ultra/high settings selected and it runs faster than i expected, i ran a few demos, Just Cause 2 and ran it in DX10 mode @ 1280x1024 and it had a avg 46FPs still pretty good..

but what games can use its full potential without a great loss in the FPS department?

Anyway I see your card is 55nm 192SP which is unusual...but I think you have a lot of OC headroom.

There some real headroom in the clocks, its not clocked very high at-all standard.

Yeah those are pretty miserable standard clocks! I would just push it as far as it would go. Keep an eye on the temps...keep them below 80-85C and just keep pushing the clocks and test with something like MSI kombustor.

My 55nm 260 216 does 771/1584/1242 core/shader/memory...but that's with 1.18V

I would try 650/1407/1100 first...then if that's stable keep pushing up from there Shader clocks are the most important BTW...anything over 1407 is pretty good.

Also when you feel more comfortable overclocking you may be able to add some voltage by flashing the BIOS.

It should, yes. For example my single 260 at overclocked settings pretty much matches a GTX 285 in performance.

my MOBO is an OEM B*tch a** piece of ****.... i can find a decent bios to flash it to, i flashed it about a few months ago with the HP updated Bios

if you can find me a decent bios for my mobo i will glady accept!

I was referring to flashing your card....not the mobo.

But post up your motherboard model or at least desktop model number and there MAY be a flash for it...but don't get your hopes up.

Probably you will only see higher framerates in games when the gaming resolution is high enough with AA enabled. That's basically what adding more video memory does, but some games also use alot more texture data than average so those will also run smoother when more video memory is present on the card.

I recommend MSI afterburner for GPU overclocking. It has rivatuner at its core, but is very simple and easy to use, and nicely laid out...it's the best GPU overclocking tool I've seen in the last 15 years

Yes, it doesnt need to be MSI card to be able to use Afterburner.

i guess ill just push it to its limits, i figure thats how i will find out whats going on inside...

i remember trying to OC my quadro fx 1000, my 6800XE, and my 7300GT (all AGP cards)
with no problem......

i never jacked around with a somewhat high endish PC like the one i have now, (high end in comparison to the others i had before) so its a scary thought...

okay, i seemed to get my card to top off at 1368 (shaderclock) anything above that resets my card to lower than stock clock speeds (wierdly) but after a restart the clock speeds go back to normal.....

Final results of maximum stable OC for my GTX260 1.8gb:

core clock: 618
shader clock: 1368
memory clock:1058
gpu temp: 82.0C
pcb temp:60.0C

I didn't know such a thing existed as a 55nm 192 core gtx260... all that video memory is strange too , almost like it's designed for 3d workstation work rather than gaming , some weird oem model i guess......

that looks like a horribly clocked oem card. its 55nm so no software overvoltage. I had my 260 clocked at 666/1458/2304
edit with your shader at 1368 try 621,626, or 633 core.see if that helps. that memory may be able to go higher too
