    Hi guys and girls.

Im a pc technician but never touched the overclocking status of pc's at all over all my experience, a friend of mine told me to make a forum post with all the details for advice on how to succeed on overclocking my machine.

I'll list all the details ive got regarding my pc so here we go.

    PC Spec:

    Maximus Formula sckt775 - X38 (cpu-z listing)
    Asus Triton 78
    Intel Core 2 Quad 6700 kentsfield - 65nm - socket 775 LGA
    6GB DDR2 1022 Corsair Dominator
    8800GTX Ultra 768GDDR3 PCI-E
    3.5TB storage +

Now what ive done in bios is switch a section from auto overclock to overclocking from the standard 6700 2.6ghz to "3ghz 6850" mode.
This kicks my cpu from 2.6ghz from 3ghz automatically from bios without doing anything, tested with prime95 etc and all works perfectly fine.

What i want to do is manually do an overclock to as much possible from my stock of 2.66ghz

Currently at my 3ghz clock on automatic overclock from the bios option, from the readings in cpu-z its running at the following

    core speed : 18000mhz
    multiplier : x 6.0

whenever the cpu is idle i suggest its not evening performing at 3ghz. My friend said this is a power option(s) you need to disable within your bios, which i have no idea how to find this or these options.

So from the basics i would like to remove the power features to keep it at the minimum of 2.6ghz 24/7.

The next would be how to start moving the cpu from 2.66ghz upwards (ive seen others on 6600 and 6700 same as mine around the 3.5ghz mark).

My cooling is sufficent to go as far as possible in my eyes, everytime ive tried doing it manually its either failed by gettin an overclocking error message asking me to return to bios or go to default settings. Other times its blue screened when accesssing windows.

Any help appreciated, especially from people with experience within this board and cpu..preferably both but thats doubtful im going to find.

    Kind Regards

    Alexander "Ice" Woodward

cheers for the 2 posts...im really after how to disable my cpu lowering to 1.8ghz x6 multiplyer on idle from 3ghz 10x multi....any ideas please welcome...then i can move to actually slowly overclocking it

You're looking for the option - C1E Suppport : Disabled

that should stop it lowering the multiplier.

Ice- I'm assuming you have a hefty aftermarket cooler, right? If you don't, that's your first step.

ohh yes socter man1, ive got a beefy asus triton 78...like i listed above....i checked all the reviews before getting it and people said it was good for overclocking, and on the marketing of the product that it was designed for gaming on and overclocking.

DSK - ill have a look in the bios and try and find it...its my first step...after this im running into abit of a snowstorm....any tips with what i should be doing, gradually to get it to a stable decent overclock.

DSk - found the option within bios.

C1E support was enabled. changed to disabled like you mentioned.

Im still having the cpu cycle down from 10x to 6x (making it 3ghz to 1.8ghz)
any more ideas ?....friend said it could be more than one option.

    cheers in advanced, Ice

Hmm look for Speedstep and disable that

Any power saving features in general.

I usually jam allot of voltage into my chip (1.4 or higher) then overclock to my goal then lower the voltage intill its unstable

then knock the voltage back up one or two steps.

Use LinX to test for stableness

5 rounds with high ram usage

    http://www.youwatched.com/datajay/linx(0.64).7z

Try keep your core temps below 90c when stress testing

    80c is recommended.

right noted. ill look for speedstep. im gnna get the manual from the site and have a breif look into it....should give me more details their about it.

so you reckon start wit hthe cpu voltage....get that right then hit up the fsb etc.

DSK...i found speed step by Intel....disabled it...now its 3ghz 24/7...thanks for the heads up...thats the basics out of the way...now im going to start adjusting the vcore like you say.

Ok so ive set the mark off...ive managed to hit 3.3/3.4ghz without blue screening and windows working ok.

Problem im coming up with is when im running prime. I run the torture test, the two from the top "small FFTs & In-place.."

Using the quad core ive got 4 cpus running. All of them pass the tests except one. "worker #4". Last time i ran the test i got "fatal error" after test 1. "resuting sum was 1.01475..., expected 1.014758... (the numbers were different).

Then it said hardware failure detected, consult stree.txt. whilst all other 3 cpus keep on running fine and so does the pc meanwhile.

please hint me some ideas, ive just going thru different voltages and fsb, trying to see what i can get out of my cpu with good stabity all round.

When you start to get crashes or instability, just up the voltage by one step and try again.

thnx xeno...ive had some help from here and others i know in person who've got overclocking history....all helps....managed so far to get it at 3.2ghz very easily. Im pushing for 3.4ghz and beyond...cheers for any help..

ive been using cpu cpu stability test and prime95 ...run each for 20mins and no errors.

Thou whilst stressing the cpu ive come accross something weird, coretemp reads that core 0 and 1 run about 10 degrees more than 2 and 3 cores. any ideas to why this is? someone said i should resink the heatsink, or is this normal for quad cores to be variant different...i was told couple degrees it should be different not a whopping 10.

    can anyone shed any light?

Well 10c is not unheard of for a temp differnece between cores but yeah i think a resit of you're cooler would help things.

right....ive refitted it. still the same temperatures....managed to get it to 3.4ghz so far stable on all tests ive run...each for couple hours from yesterday.

Hmm well remember all cpus have a curve on them so i guess its normal for your cpu everyone is slightly different.

also most coolers are not flat either.
