Default my own baking topic! 8800gt! - 01-20-2010, 21:50 | posts: 31 | Location: the netherlands

hello!,
i made this topic for ppl that are intrested in baking a gpu! i found some posts about this on some forums on the net.
and since my brother killed a 8800gt OC'ed by never removing the dust or watching the temps, i though it would be a good idea to try it.

the gpu first showed artifacts and then completely died.

this is the gpu i baked, with the heatsink still on it.

this is the gpu after i removed the heatsink.

here u see the card rdy to get baked on aluminium foil balls.

after that i putted the gpu like that in the oven. on 200C for 7 minuts +-

and then i tested it in my bro his rigg, and it worked!!

after i told a friend of mine that it worked, he tried it on a 7800gt.... it didnt work, lol!
it seems that it isnt always successful!

are there more ppl that have expirience with baking gpu's? post them here

That's quite much dust in that case...

This owen trick has mostly worked on laptop gpu's, but if card doesnt work, there's nothing to lose.

I might be living under a rock here, but what's the point of putting your GPU into the oven?

i guess its supposed to re-solder connections that may have burned out due to overheating or something like that.

I recently tried baking a dying GTX280 as a last resort and was skeptical to say the very least, but desparate - needless to say it didn't work with mine but I'm glad it brought your card back to life!

At the very least, the theory behind it is definitely plausible, after all the temps most people suggest to bake the cards at is at least enough to soften most solder allows. I just think most failures tend to be chip related as opposed to connector related...but if it works, it works and that's all that matters in the end.

I thought the plastic on the DVI ports would melt if not removed before baking?

nopes the ports didnt melt i readed that the ports only melt if u use a too high temp.
but are all dvi ports made of the same material? maybe some have lower meltpoints then other? i dunno!

I think most of the plastic used on the board and connectors is PVC based and as such has a pretty high melting temp (at the lowest probably around 100 deg C/212 deg F). Maybe if the oven wasn't accurate and went way above the setpoint when switching, but that's unlikely.

Only thing on mine that melted at all was the plastic power indicator 'light guide', but the LED even still worked fine.

It's kinda like the old hard drive in the freezer 'aint got nothing to lose' attempt...either you're gonna freak out with excitement and amazement if it works, or shrug your shoulders and move on if it doesn't.

Damn! If i knew that before, i could "stolen" (ask if i could get it to my home) that broken 8800GT that was in the PC repairing shop that i was working for the school... It could have been great if i could just pop in the oven, then on my rig and dada, new vid card ^^ (a video card 4 times more powerfull than mine exactly ¬¬)

I really don't see why ppl bake the card in the oven..
A cheap 500~600w heat/paint striper gun can reflow the solder of a dead card/motherboard a lot easier.
You can use foil a mask and cut out around the chips, this way you can avoid frying nearby components on the circuit that don't need the excess direct heat.
At least with a heat gun you can aim the concentrated heat at the particular points on the card in brief 10~15 sec bursts.
I've done this with PS3s, Xbox 360s, laptops, motherboards and video cards.

But each his own I guess

Interesting.

U know for most ppl whom don't know much about electronics well they'll send back the cards for rma. This might make a difference.

But isn't it so that if you still have warranty left, you would send the card back because you'll get a new one in exchange?

This is pretty interesting, I might have to try this with my 6600GT and see if it helps. I doubt it though as I think the memory's bricked on that card. It's still worth a try.

I nearly fixed dead X1800 XT with that trick. It boots but artifacting is quite bad, however I fixed two GeForce 6800 Go MXM cards using this trick. 10 minutes @ 190c-200c did the job nicely.

I had a serious artefacts problem on my GTX280.
Win7 boots fine till the logon screen.
Well everytime i wrote my login password i had to pray to let my desktop appear and not the artefacts again. If it was succesfull i had some time to work till it randomly gets artefacting again.
At the latest when i was starting a 3d API or a game i got my artefacts.
It was looking like that:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y58...ay/Picture.jpg

Well, then i found this website:
http://www.overclockers.com/the-oven...-with-an-oven/

Its the same what "preach" is showing us

so i did then same 8 minutes at 200C
and Voilà , my "branded" new GTX280
