It will give you proper driver for your chipset to enable all AHCI features. As for boot speeds goes, I don't know - never tested Intel vs. generic driver. One of the things that will slow your boot time at the hardware discovery time is that AHCI requires additional controller rom to be loaded at the motherboard boot, which will then discover hdd/odds. You can't speed that part.
But the process of loading Windows shouldn't be any slower than normal.

okay cool.

I sorted out my stupidly long boot times. i unplugged one of my 3x1TB usb drives (the only one connected to a usb 2.0 port instead of usb 3.0, which i understand the drives are only 2.0) and this seems to have solved the issue, as it seems the usb 3.0 ports on my board aren't active until your in windows or something? but all the same now swapping that one drive over to e-SATA and installing those Intel AHCI drivers my boot times have sped up and Windows seems a load more snappy. i cant comment on how it is in games as i don't play many anymore i use this PC more for Graphic design work and photo editing.

My next question though is how does AHCI work with RAID? as soon i will be adding a second Vertex 2 drive?

Basically, RAID will have everything that AHCI offers and more.

just tried this and had some bad performance tests. then i noticed that when you use this method to switch over from ide to AHCI your using the Microsoft default drivers.. So i installed my chip set driver (manually) (ICH19R AHCI Controller) and now i see a complete difference if performance.! Great tip.!
Basically when you use this reg hack to run AHCI mode you gotto update the ide ata/atapi controller driver.

That screenshot showing the Ultra 320 SCSI hard drive at the top drives for comparison me nuts... I never got my drive to go that fast, and I had that setup:
-Seagate Cheetah SCSI drive (15K RPM too)
-LSI Logic host card (PCI-x in a full PCI-x slot at 133MHz) sporting U320

My eSATA hard drive blew the doors off that thing, and I finally uninstalled it (it was fast, but it added like fifteen seconds to boot time and was noisy). Good to know about those drive options if I get a SSD someday.

Weird, I've done it on 3 PC's with no problems, does it boot if you change it back in the biso again?

Needed a confirmation. Does enabling AHCI mode on normal hard drives has any positive effect at all. I have a WD Caviar Black 500GB (32M cache), and I feel it becomes a bit unresponsive when I enable AHCI mode. Didn't notice anything unusual though on my IDE mode. Here's my screenshot of HDTune bench:

Just a note, AHCI didn't work with any of the Intel chipset drivers I tried, I removed them all and let windows install its own and its worked fine ever since.

Sorry for my late reply but no, there is a separate download package on Intel's website if you have an Intel chipset. Nowadays it's not called Matrix Storage Manager anymore but Rapid Storage Technology.

The method above describes how to divert that.

For normal HDDs do not expect any real perf difference.

AHCI (advanced Host Controller Interface) allows hot-swapping, improves performance allows functions like NCQ, TRIM and so on. It's more flexible and is definitely a notch faster with SSDs seeking high perf in terms of peak performance.

See below, image 1 has SATA install (left img) - Image 2 AHCI (right img).
Trim also works on IDE

Quote:
TRIM is non-specific to either SATA controller mode, and will work equally well in both IDE and AHCI-mode. Benchmark Reviews will soon publish a detailed report that illustrates the recovery levels for each SSD controller tested here.

I have been hitting a wall this last week on getting the BIOS to accept the AHCI setting.
I cloned my HHD onto the SSD while in IDE mode.
When that was completed, I then made the changes in the Registry - In one forum the Reg edits suggested was for msahci & pciide, amdsata, & amdsbs - all set the "Start' to 0.

When I reboot and enter the BIOS and change to AHCI I get a error:
“Re-boot & select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”

The AHCI Bios settings are > Main / Storage Configuration
Configure Sata as - (3 options: IDE / Raid / AHCI).
And
Advanced / Onboard Devices / Controller Mode: (2 options : IDE or AHCI)

I do not see as quoted above ..." "Integrated Peripherals" and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE."

My Sata Port Order
1. Not detected
2. Seagate Drive
3. OCZ drive
4. Not detected
5. Not detected
6. Not detected

& the Boot order is
1. Sata - OCZ
2. Sata - DVD
3. ATAPI – CD
4. Floppy

I have spent a lot of time on this and have assits form other sites, but to no avail-
Any suggestions?
(for one - should I return the '0's back to 3's for pciide, amdsata, & amdsbs ?

Thx!!

the SSD (OCZ) - I had it cloned from my Hitachi HHD - which is no longer connected- its in the closet.

The Seagate is a drive for my back ups. There is no OS on it.

Swap your drives around so the OCZ is in port #1 or #2...as long as it's the first HDD at least.

If it still doesn't boot then you prob have a corrupt/non existent boot sector or MBR. What did you clone it with?

From Microsoft, might help you:

This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To resolve this issue yourself, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
Exit all Windows-based programs.
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Msahci
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
