If you use DVB-T (surely analog tv broadcasts have ended there too?) it doesn't actually matter what software you use since they all save the original stream. I used DVBViewer in Vista Business but now since Windows 7 Pro has improved MC (and it is included in Pro) I use that. Works nicely.

I use DVB, but analogue is still used loads here, I live at Uni now, but at home all I can get is analogue and only 4 channels not even the 5th. The TV infrastructure in the UK is absolute crap.

Anyway thanks, will have a look at DVBViewer ,I'm using XP and Win 7 atm, recon its easier if I just boot into Win 7 and use the media centre instead then?

Media Center does things pretty well and the recording service works very well, I would recommend using it. If you have analog tuner too it should work with MC too. As far as I know it supports analog TV cards and you can set the recording quality for analog recordings.

Analogue broadcasts ended here in Finland about three years ago and I can watch all channels even at our summer cottage. DVB-T coverage is rather good here nowadays.

I live 10 miles outside of two major UK cities(Leeds/Bradford) and don't even get all 5 analogues. I'm at university atm and get digital here though. I've had my TV card for 4 years and never used it, it has 6 tuners. 2 analogue, 2 digital and 2 satellite (and a 56k modem built in lol). Will see how it goes cheers.

Ok, windows 7 stops searching at 80% and does nothing and won't work, DVBViewer only finds 6 BBC channels and nothing else, as does some other software I tried, why don't they just make it like a TV?

Might want to take a look here and maybe here.
The program(s) mightn't have UK specific information included, or it might be out of date. I'd expect it to be pretty decent regardless though.

DVBViewer works fine here, it's actually the best program I've found.

been using DSCALER for ages.

the good thing is that it often doesn't require drivers for your tvtuner (it works even if you don't install drivers for your card), if the chip is supported it loads its own generic drivers when launching the software and unloads them when you quit, works perfect with W7.

also great quality captures, XviD, H264 or uncompressed and you can customize the codec settings.

it's open source and free too which makes it a win.
