Default Driver rollback and now I have TWO NVIDIA Control Panel applets! - 11-18-2009, 04:40 | posts: 1,532 | Location: England | User is Offline

I tried the 195.55 beta drivers but decided to rollback to the 191.07 WHQL ones when Pro Evo Soccer 2010 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising decided they liked to crash during loading!

Anyway, I rolled back and the drivers are working fine but when I click on Start > Control Panel, the resulting list shows not one but TWO NVIDIA Control Panel entries.

Since you cannot delete the duplicate entry by right-clicking on the icon and selecting delete (since the option doesn't exist), does anyone know how I can get rid of second entry without me having to do an uninstall/clean/reinstall?

I presumed that there was a second Nvcpl (2).cpl file in the System32 folder but, nope, there's only the one. It looks like it may be a registry error but I've no idea where to look or what keys I'd need to remove to fix it.

Thanks.

P.S. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit by the way.

I do believe that PhysX is a separate entry in the add / remove program list. PhysX seems to still be a separate module.

Recently, it was mentioned that PhysX was made as a 64bit app also. It could be now you might have both the 32 and 64 bit control panel applets.

delete that one entry of nvcpl and that should delete both, then either uninstall control panel in the programs section, then reinstall the control panel by going to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\191.07\WinVista_Win7_64\In ternational\nvcplsetupint.exe

Not sure if this will work but give it a try and good luck

Edit: Update:

just delete the entry nvcpl
then go into Device manager, click on display adapters, then your card, update driver click browse, then list of drivers, then have disk, and finally C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\191.07\WinVista_Win7_64\In ternational\nvcpl
then wait a bit while it installs and this should do the trick...

good luck

I fixed it.

Seems the 195.55 beta drivers no longer install the NVIDIA control panel applet to the Windows\System32 folder like the 191.xx drivers. Instead it is installed in the Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Control Panel Client folder and a registry entry, a Namespace, is created to link to the Control Panel menu.

When the drivers where rolled back, Windows left the link to that folder and file in the registry but reinstated the original Nvcpl.cpl file in the System32 folder as well. End result: two NVIDIA control panel applets in the Control Panel menu.

I just used a program called Shell Object Editor (v3.21) to delete the additional entry.

if you're able to rollback, then you aren't installing the 195 drivers properly

....seriously i had issues too when installing 195.39 over 191.*

Yeah I always had issues installing over major driver version changes. With ATI or Nvidia.

i had this happen to me some time ago....it was caused by an improper install/uninstall...boot into safe mode and run drivesweeper...then delete entries physx and nvidia display and reboot...then reinstall driver and physx

Yeah, especially when they add new profile features.

I should note that i also had the duplicated CPL issue, but i had system tools installed, which installs an older version of nvcplui.exe unless a newer version is present. (i expect the system tools team will be updating in the future)

By properly, do you mean [takes a deep breath] the oh-so-tedious uninstall, reboot into safe mode, run Driver Sweeper, install from safe mode then reboot *phew* back into normal Windows thing?

Well I don't do that unless I have major issues with the drivers that require me to do so. And that hasn't happened very often to be honest. Yes, I had problems with the 195.55 drivers with two games crashing, PES 2010 and Operation Flashpoint: DR, but then so do other people apparently who *did* install the drivers properly. So mine clearly did install correctly - they ran all the other games I tested fine after all and there was no trace of the 191.07 versions in System Information - they just didn't rollback properly.

Actually they did rollback correctly, I just had two NVIDIA control panel applets that's all because the 195.55 one wasn't correctly deleted from the Program Files folder. It didn't stop any games or software running however, it was just an annoyance when I opened the control panel.
