Default Strange problem with a new old monitor - 11-12-2009, 15:47 | posts: 136 | Location: Germany | User is Offline

Hi there

I just bought a LG Flatron L2320A (used). It#s really huge and i was really happy....
But i't doesn't get a resolution over 1280*1024....
I tried to find driver (because that thing is nearly 5 years old) but the only one i found didn't work.

Video-drivers weren't the problem, updated them an hour ago.

Can anyone help me or has anyone an idea what i could try?

Thanks in advance, i really hope someone can help me.

Your monitor should have a native resolution of 1920X1200
http://www.superwarehouse.com/p.cfm?...C-0FD189281302

Ok, what video card do you have?

What driver version do you have for the video card?

What version of direct X do you have?

What cable are you using:
VGA?
S video?
Analog RGB?
Digital Dvi?

This will help me assist you.

ok, thanks a lot:

- ATI Radeon 4600 series (i think it's the 4670)
- driver version 8.661.0.0 (the newest on the ati-website... catalyst 9.10 it's called there.
- I'm using the DVI cable (DVI-D). maybe also worth mentioning, it runs through a so called media station, so it's a DVI cable from computer to mediastation and the combined DVI and power cable from the station to the monitor.
- the only hint to what directX version i got is the empty "DirectX 9" Folder on my C: Drive. How can i see the installed directX version?

For DirectX version, open the Start Menu, hit Run and then type in dxdiag. Let that load up and it'll display the DirectX version.

Have you tried running the cable directly to the monitor to see if it displays the correct res?

I'll check the DirectX version when i'm back home.

The problem with the cable is that the monitor needs the mediastation for power. It has only one cable coming out of it with power and video-signale.

Direct X Version 9.0c

@WaroDaBeast: your driver didn't change anything, maybe i'm doing it wrong, but i did a normal driver update for the monitor...

Edit: Something strange happend...
I wanted to try the VGA cable so i switched them (computer was running, just stop the power source for the monitor).
VGA didn't cahnge anything. But when i then changed back to the DVI cable the monitor had several new resolution up to something about 2000*something. But he wouldn't show me the whole screen at ones, i had to scroll. Weird, because the maximum resolution for the LG is 1900*1200 or something like that.
Anyway, when i rebooted the computer everything was back to normal, maximum resolution 1200*1024 ....

Does that help you diagnose my horrible problem

Thanks again, i hoped you guys solve it!

Update:
I just tried to fix the Problem by modding the Drivers with RivaTuner.
It didn't really work. I now can use the 1920*1200 Resolution, but only in some zooom mode. I have to scoll over the desktop to get from one side to the other....
Apart from that the quality is just horrible, but that's no surprised as it is zoomed in...

So I got closer to the solution, but i'm not quite there... help?

Is there a setting on the monitor's menu to change the source from analog to digital? If there is, make sure it is set into digital mode and see if it makes a difference. I know some monitors can have the different sources, I'm just not that familiar with yours to see if it has it. There may also be a setting that has it locked at that small of res in the menus, maybe see if there is anything that can be adjusted for it. Typically though, Windows handles the resolution.. and also depends on the cable you use. Try a DVI dual link if possible, not sure if it'll matter but you never know.

i can switch the source, but due to the media station that will only switch to another conector on the mediastation. so no improvement there....

I thought about the cable too. i'm not very familiar with the DVI, but i read somewhere, that there are different types of cables. maybe i need one with more pins... but i think the guy who used this monitor on his computer had the same cable...

Well, theres DVI-D, DVI-A, and DVI-I. DVI-D is pure digital, DVI-A is digital to analog, and DVI-I is either digital or analog depending on what it is connected to. Then, you have Dual Link and Single Link. Single Link is for every resolution up to 1920x1200 at 60hz and Dual Link goes all the way up to 2560x1600 at 60hz.

For you, I'd recommend a DVI-I Single Link cable.. though if the monitor is old enough, say 5 years or more, maybe a DVI-A would work since it'd convert the digital signal into analog when you plug it into the monitor. But a DVI-I should work out alright, possibly DVI-D if you have it, but DVI-I is nearly universal.

Which one does your cable connector look like?

the cable connecting the media station to the computer is a DVI-D Single Link.
The cable connecting the monitor to the mediastation is a DVI-I Dual link. this has to get power to the monitor as well, because it's the only one coming out of the monitor.

When checking that i found some of the pins seem to be shorter... maybe they slided some milimeters inside the plug.
could that maybe cause my problems? I hope not, because the cable coming from the monitor is fixed and can't be replaced!

Edit: I just tried it with the DVI-D duallink from my other monitor. didn't change anything (at least without rebooting, but i think that wouldn't have helped either. i did reinstal the driver though)

Another Edit: Oh, i forgot: i found out that there seem to be different versions of my monitor, at least on some driver pages there is an analog-version, an DVI-D and a DVI-A version. But i don't think that there is a difference in the drivers, RivaTuner called the monitor L2323T (although it is a L2320A). so they probably all use the same drivers.

I would say it is more likely to be the Graphics cards driver that is the issue rather than the monitor, try installing the graphics card manually from device manager, and tell it to let you choose the driver to install from a disk, and point it to the extracted driver folder on the C:\ATI\xxx\xxx folder

Didn't change anything. I'm now trying the ATI catalyst control center, maybe there are some setting which can help me.

Edit: there are some setting where i can force the videocard to enable 720p HD or 1080p HD, but i'll get a warning that this might destroy the monitor... so i'm afraid to try
apart from that i get the same resolutions.

Your 720p is 1280x720 (your monitor will support it)

Your 1080p is 1920x1080 (If your screen goes above this rez it should be fine)

right now i use the rez 1280*768 because it's the only one which doesn't make my eyes bleed.

and on the monitor there are those two options "4:3" and "full". 4:3 gives me big black border on the sides and really distorted icons and stuff.
so now imporvement htere in my eyes, or waht where you aiming at?

If you click on CCC and goto the Desktops and Displays setting > then at the bottom, click the small arrow on the top right of the small Display picture of your screen > click configure > click at the top HDTV Support > then at the bottom click ADD.

Configure the full screen display it opens up and save that rez, then set it as the default rez.

ok, i found that setting...
but you need to help me:
I first have to add an HD format but i'm not sure which one to take... the choices are:
1080i30 (NTSC)
1080i25 (PAL)
1080p60 (NTSC)
1080p24 (HD)
1080p50 (PAL)

from qhat you said one of the 1080 should work, because my monitor has a native resolution of 1920*1200/60hz
