im wondering at the moment which upgrade should i go with , an entire i7 system with asus rampage 2 mobo and i7 920 or a 2 X 5870 , the thing is i can only afford one of those upgrades , so which one of those will give me more kick in video games???

if your signature is up to date id go for 4 gigs of ram and a 64bit os in the first place
after that id keep it as it is for 6m to a year

And i would say a CPU/Mobo update to i7 would benefit more from GPU upgrade to HD5870(if you can even find them at all). The triple-channel memory boosting memory bandwidth compared to your current DDR2 setup. And more efficient per-core performance with the i7.
You most likely see better performance with ur current GPU's on i7.
