Default Graphics performance puzzle... - 11-08-2009, 08:03 | posts: 3 | User is Offline

I have been running an 8800 GTS / 640M for some time on my box ( 2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad, 2G memory, VISTA SP2)

I recently upgraded my monitor to a 1920x1080 HP2159m.

Looks very nice but here's the clunky bit. After a while graphics progammes seem to grind slowly to a halt. They can be a sophisticated as Flight Simulator (FS9 starts at circa 30 frames / second and eventually goes clunk down to 1 fps) or just a graphics on-line game (play a few rounds of something like Bejewelled Blitz and its OK then suddenly its down to seconds interval between screen updates).

Am I being optimistic trying to run 1920x1080 on the 8800GTS or is there something else wrong.

I've tried various versions of the NVIDIA drivers up to and including the latest - I'm currently on 182.50 but they don't seem to make much difference.

Any thought welcomed.

John

That is strange indeed. Can you keep an eye on memory usage of all the processes in your computer as your FPS goes down? Does the 3d app in question just gobble RAM until it grinds to a halt? Some other application?

I'd keep an eye on your temperatures as time goes on as well. If these are getting too high, things will start to throttle themselves to prevent damage.

Well, thanks for the thoughts.

I can't see any obvious memory escalation - FS9 has a commit of 443,500K / working set of 318,136 according to perfmon and doesn't appear to change much as the thing slows (drops very suddenly from 22+ fps to 1/2fps in say under one second)

Temperatures, I'm not really familiar with what they should be but GPU-Z gives about 43 to 45 degrees on the board, 52-554 degrees on the GPU; doesn't seem to vary with performance

Does this still happen when you switch back to the other monitor or to a lower resolution? You seemed to imply that was the turning point where performance went from normal to how it is now.

I don't necessarily think it's a driver issue but I'll leave your thread in this section for now, johnwillimas. Btw: welcome to Guru3D.

Maybe also a bit unrelated, but I'd definitely look into getting more RAM if possible. You seriously should consider upgrading to 4 GB of RAM as it's not only going to help you in games, but in overall system performance, too.

Could be the card downclocking to 2d mode. You should monitor it with Evga Precision.

I don't recall the G80 cards having separate clocks for 2D/3D....

Ho Humm,

tried running the HP2159 at lower resolution - same problem.

Went back to the old monitor (1280x1024)and tried that again - aha! same problem, so its obviously NOT the new HP monitor.

I'll try back tracking drivers to a 160 variant and see how I get on with that....

Anyway, I'm with Cybermancer on this one. Get 2 more gigs of ram as Vista is really mem-hungry. Also, try monitoring your card's stats with RivaTuner and when the slowdown happens, check to see if something has changed radically.

Your card is probably slowly overheating as you play. Pop the card out and see if it is dirty.

If that was the case it would just lock up and probably get a nice bsod.

To the op, disable any software or services you don't need, failing that, get more memory.
