Default 2x2 or 4x4 AA with ATI cards? - 11-06-2009, 17:27 | posts: 3,243 | Location: Austin | User is Offline

I was just wondering if there was a way to tweak the AA settings with ATI cards to use 2x2 or 4x4 AA. There's an option for these AA settings with Rivatuner on a Nvidia based GPU, but it's non-existant with ATI cards. While I'm aware that I can get similar quality by setting my AA levels up to 8xSSAA, it's not quite the same.

4x4AA

8xSSAA

Multisampling/Supersampling just doesn't get the finer details such as the grill or the slide on the gun like how 4x4AA does.

Ideas?

Sadly, Edge Detect doesn't get the finder details either.

I've tried that too, as well as every possible combination in ATT and CCC, haha.

Basically the AA settings in ATT and CCC only affect the sample height. For example, 4xAA in CCC ( which in reality is 1x4AA ) at 1920x1080 pixel samples ends up to 1920x4320 samples. 4x4 affects width and height samples, so 1920x1080 samples ends up to 7680x4320 samples. That's why it looks a lot cleaner in most games.

The HD5870 only AA's one of the two planes, just like the HD4870.

I've heard before that it's possible to at least get 2x2AA on ATI cards using DirectX Tweaker, but I've not been able to verify this.

Hmm I'm interested in this too. You just explained a whole lot to me Levans. I was always slightly happier with Nvidias AA. If there is a way to do what you're saying I'd like to know too.
