Default Win 7 is newborn. Keep your XP first. - 11-03-2009, 00:01 | posts: 514 | Location: Hong Kong SAR | User is Offline

Unwise and reckless, I installed Windows 7 a couple of days after I bought it greedy for Direct X 10. Now, I can't say I was toasted but this is not the most brilliant action I've ever taken.

After shutting down the System Recovery (with the heavy background work), Windows 7 is actually as fast as XP for desktop work. I like one thing the most: Windows 7 is smart enough to organize files according to let's say names instantly. That means if you rename a file named "Z" to "A", the file will relocate in front of the file named "B" immediately when the change is saved. Moreover, no longer do we have to type "0" before "1" while naming files for the order to be correct (in XP: 1,10...19,2,20). These things may be insignificant but it sure does feel Microsoft'd looked at even these small matters and Windows 7's slogan "Designed for You" is not a lie.

As far as gaming goes, I installed Hitman Blood Money and it could not start running even on compatibility mode. I've just installed Resident Evil 5 (damn long time it took to install). We'll see about that.

The compatibility is not as good as Microsoft claimed, lots of programs from XP can't be installed here. So people shouldn't follow my footsteps too eagerly so soon. But I don't mind more white mouses joining the party (evil crackling laughters). After all, somebody has to take the fall and report the problems back to MS.

That's why I had/have always XP in double boot, just in case. For example, NOLF (No one lives forever) retail "doesn't run" on Windows 7. I never needed patches to run it but I will have to get them now to see if they solve the problem. Meanwhile, I installed it on XP and it runs like always, i.e. great.

I am still not testing Thief 2 (my beloved game!), but I could run into any issues probably. Let's see what happens.

Besides, there is another reason to have XP in double boot. It is related to security. Some malware (e.g. trojans) are practically impossible to delete (even if you use special software to delete them) from the OS they installed on. For example, suppose that a trojan installs on a file while you run Windows 7. Even after detecting it, you could easily have many problems to delete the file. Some times you come across with hard-to-delete files that are undetected trojans dormant deep in your drive. You want to delete them but you cannot. The simple solution is going to XP and delete them from there. Very smart! The same thing if the trojan gets installed on XP, you delete it easily from Windows 7.

So, to me having XP in the background is a MUST always.

the upgrade packs are not that good to get, as it is best to do a full formate and install or a new OS, so it stops any problems from occuring and also use latest drivers straight away, which is to also stop any problems from happening,

so really just buy the full version of windows 7, you will get what you are supposed to get, and very good running OS, and not as many problems if you used the upgrade packs.

Loving Windows 7. I can even get Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 working straight away in x64, and as long as I can get the BG series working then the OS is a winner to me.

If games are having issues in Win7, they were probably having problems in Vista, and if that's the case, the game is probably too old anyway.

Unfortunately you just have to move on. Any new games are fine, same with programs.

I haven't noticed any problems with Win7...first MS OS to just work 'right out of the box'! Why can't you just use the XP compatibility mode?

things in 7 that are better than XP:
Search function
Stability
GUI
Security
Memory handling
Optimized for SSD
Multi-core utilization
DX10/11
Networking
Set-up
Update Center finds almost EVERY driver needed(at least for initial use)
No need for Sata drivers on initial install(come on...are you serious?!!!)
How 7 /Vista handles driver failure( no bsod, just shuts down the problem driver or program)

And those are just off the top of my head...

oh...not to mention...It runs better on my netbook than XP did, which has such low specs it is not funny.

If you're upgrading from Vista to Win7...and actually update your drivers and software....everything is already up to date. No need to install a new OS to get "up-to-date" drivers.

Some of us wanted the stability. After 8 years....I still have yet to see XP go more than a few weeks without a BSOD, random reboot, IE or explorer.exe crashing....

Really? Its probably time to re-format then. XP is hard to crash, all things considered. The only real advantages i see beyond XP that I will ever need:
Numbering system: 2 finally comes before 19
Autodownload drivers

Really, mutlicore usage benchmarks (let along real world usage) shows minimal improvments, my SSD has apparently gotten slower (compared to Vista at least...), and I see no real change anywhere else. Heck, sleep mode takes a good 30-45 seconds now in 7, where it took <5 in Vista!
