Doing a clean install, this happens very quickly during database construction during first run.

I'd like to join in, Windows 7 Ultimate x64, MSI Master Overcocking Thing version of RivaTuner, crashes always no matter what I do.
Forcing driver version lower does nothing.
I get the same error report as the original poster.
The crash happens like this:
1. Crashes immediately when starting
or
2. RivaTuner runs fine doing nothing, but if it has to touch the drivers, for example hotkey profile activation, then it crashes
I sense a disturbance in the Force.

Update: after a successful few minutes of non-crashing, I tried several panels in RivaTuner, monitoring worked fine, but when I entered the overclocking menu it crashed again.
After that, however, it threw this too: http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/2789/captureq.jpg

I believe i found what might be making this issue as pointed in this image

Maybe the Display file is the problem. I'm going back to 191 because it dosent crash and also it allowes me to make my fan speed at 60% it gets hot here in aus.

The display server reports itself as "191.07" instead of "Not Found" for me - happened before with older drivers too, I think.
But should it cause a crash? After all, nvapi.dll caused the problem, not nvdisps.dll.

Noise about this all over the net. /build doesn't help.
Oh well they are beta.
Looking forward to your investigation cause I'd kinda like to give these a go myself.

Got some free time to peek into it today. Looks like since 195 series NVIDIA decided to make NVAPI.DLL as a static library for some reason, so attempt to load it on demand and unload when not needed causes it to crash now. Will bypass it by keeping NVAPI loaded all the time when 195 sereis are detected.

Static. I thought DLL's, as you say, are dynamic. Interesting.
I haven't loaded them yet and probably won't unless this is Nv's new driver design.
Thanks for looking into this.

I've not experienced a crash, but I have experienced no way to get the rivatuner driver working. It tells me that it needs to enable no driver signing and that needs rebooting, I click yes and it reboots. I go back in a lo' and behold, still says the driver isn't loaded :/
So I can't do anything with it let alone make it crash
(Win7 x64)
==========
edit: Yeah I didn't know you had to run that RTU file to install the x64 driver. Also the RTU file wasn't associated with Rivatuner after installing Rivatuner.
Yeah also getting the crash just like everyone else, joy.

Of course, however I would like to point out the error saying to disable driver signing should be changed to tell people to run the RTU file ._.
Also, what does the "driver signing disable" feature actually change so that I can revert the settings it did if the Vista process isn't 100% compat. with Win7.

I did apply it but it didn't seem to do anything (I assume there's meant to be a watermark on the desktop). I would Still like to know what it changes in the registry etc.
I'm mostly after the Direct 3D tweaks this tool grants easy access to, if they can be enabled/tweaked manually does anyone know where to find the options and what settings are valid for them?

At least all this waiting showed me that nTune (v6.05) isn't as buggy as before, and does a pretty good job, but it doesn't have RT's hotkey support that I need.
Franpa, if you want to specifically change Direct3D settings, use nHancer.

It locked up mine when I tried to "automatically" find maximum overclocks with it.
Just don't do that sort of thing.
Profiles were broken in the old days, now they work fine.
It allows you to set your clock speeds too low though, so pay attention with any power-saving profiles or you can crash your computer.

For me on Windows 7 x64 Pro, RT does not crash with the 195.39 driver, but it happens that it doesn't load at startup.
Here is what I've found in the event log:
Code:
Faulting application name: RivaTuner.exe, version: 2.24.1.0, time stamp: 0x4a9035c7
Faulting module name: nvapi.dll_unloaded, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4ae7fb8b
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x05c82dec
Faulting process id: 0x348
Faulting application start time: 0x01ca6328fa9faa90
Faulting application path: D:\RivaTuner\RivaTuner.exe
Faulting module path: nvapi.dll
Report Id: 445468b0-cf1c-11de-81d1-00235473d0a1
nvapi.dll does exist in both System32 and SysWOW64, I think that's the same location as with previous drivers.
PS.
Path for nvdisps.dll changed to C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Display, copying it to either RT's folder or C:\Windows\System32 fixes the issue that it isn't displayed in RT.
EDIT: didn't see Unwinders post and tells he already knows where the issues are, before posting this.
