Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread, but I have always been curious. Why are we still running our PCs OS off a hard drive? I always thought it would be a good idea to have onboard integrated memory with high bandwidth, dedicated to an OS. Could also have expansion slots like current RAM has. Set it up so it has direct access to memory & the CPU. Thus making it faster & have this memory for the OS only, which could add to security. Of course a hard drive could store overflow and other programs. Maybe a moot point with SSDs. Good idea? Bad idea? Any ideas on the next big changes that will occure to the PC?

Right!!! I suggested this awhile ago in a thread about future techs that'd be cool to have! There is something like it that economy line business computers and some laptops/netbooks use, which is embedded OS. But I like this more.

You do have dedicated memory with high bandwidth that stores your OS, it's called your system memory. Your computer loads the OS stuff into the memory and runs it from there. The only benefit that having the OS in the memory from the start would be faster boots. But that memory would have to constantly be powered. With an OS like Windows 7 taking nearly 20gigs of data it would serve a very minimal benefit to have 20 gigs of onboard memory just dedicated to the OS. Especially when it needs to be constantly updated and whatnot.
