Question Windows Home Server?? - 10-14-2009, 18:43 | posts: 964 | Location: West Chester, PA | User is Online

I was looking into Windows Home Server. I was curious about the benefits of owning one of these setup. Only benefits I can imagine to owning a home server is that they are energy efficient so they can be left on all the time. I'd appreciate some pros and cons to owning a home media server. Is there even a point to owning one when current PCs can support 6 hard drives. How's the OS? Thanks.

I use FreeBSD for my home server OS, so I don't know what to say. Then again, I'm really a UNIX guy, so probably not the one to ask lol

For me, I have my FreeBSD so I get a remote UNIX box when my college's servers are under heavy loads and can grab files from home if I forget something since I usually back up this semester's work on the home server.

My media centre runs Windows 7 RC (for now ofc) and it serves media. The FreeBSD is really just a virtual machine that runs inside my media centre so the machine can serve multiple purposes than just an HTPC.
