Question Buying a new CPU - Phenom Vs. Phenom II - 10-11-2009, 16:32 | posts: 963 | Location: West Chester, PA | User is Offline

Sorry, I know this has been discussed, but I can't find specifics. I currently have a Phenom 9550 clocked at 2.64 GHz & I am happy with it's performance for the most part. Generally I can play what I want, maxed out with no issues, but have noticed it is definetly holding back my GTX 275. I'm thinking of buying a new CPU, probably the Phenom II x4 965 BE. I need something that will play some of the new games coming out without issue. If I go with the Phenom II x4 965 BE, what kind of increase in fps can I expect in some of the popular games that were recently released? Is AMD going to release any faster CPU's in the next 2-4 months? Sorry dual thread posts, don't know how that happened!

I doubt they will release another one YET but if they do I won't bother because it will be the 965 but 200MHz faster for example so 975(?) but I'd buy the 955 instead.

Yeah I heard the 955 overclocks better due to the lower voltage.

Yeah plus the 965 IS the 955 but 200MHz more lol. 955 + a nice overclock is a nice jump over your current CPU. I reckon you could get easy 3.5GHz on air with it.

Nice! I like the price difference too. $245 Vs. $189 @ newegg.

Heh...you're making the same upgrade I am! Only mine's on a different motherboard, so yeah, I'd go with the 955 BE, and flash the BIOS of the mobo to get the latest support.

Yep that would have been my second choice had the 95w 945 not been in stock.

What kind of speed/fps increase are you seeing from the 945 compared to the 9550?

I was just trolling the net trying to get an idea on Phenom Vs. Phenom II speeds. It seemed to come up in alot of other forums. Made sense do to the fact there is a 15w difference. But what do I know.... Thats why I'm asking.

Well for the most part fps in most games almost doubled. If i had known that quad would slow down my 4870 so much i would have gotten rid of it last year. For the most part the pc seems faster and games are much smoother now.

I hear you, well I dont want to make it sound like every 965 is like this plus its watercooled so I would say you are correct to believe that it would run hotter and might just match a 955.

You won't regret it. For the same price it would've cost me to upgrade the graphics card to the HD5870 alone, I decided that for about the same price, I'd just to upgrade my CPU to the 955 BE, and grab the HD5850 GPU. Sounded like a good tradeoff to me. I wasn't about to risk holding onto the 9550 myself, either, and risk bottlenecking on DX11 gaming in the long haul. By the time Win 7 comes out, the original Phenom may be useless, if not obsolete by the time the first DX11-based games start showing up.

Thats what Im saying if you going to say something like that post up some screenies or something........maybe he just booted for a few seconds at 4.4ghz.........I got superpi1m to run at 4.4ghz. Im sure Im at the top end of overclocks as far as I can see on air/water, I dont ever see anyone running 4.1 or 4.2ghz gaming stable.
