Default Falcon SSD 128 GB Failed!!! - 10-04-2009, 23:43 | posts: 169 | Location: Langley, B.C. | User is Offline

I have five drives in my tower.

640 GB Seagate
500 GB Seagate
320 GB Seagate

128 GB G.Skill Falcon SSD

064 GB Kingston SSD

I came home yesterday to the dreaded "Windows can not start due to missing file" type error and after a quick check it was obvious that the Falcon which was my C: drive had failed.

Is this happening often? I thought the point of having no moving parts was to minimize the chance of failure!? The drive is hardly 4 months old!!!

Ive always been sceptical about ssds.
Solid state , no moving parts more reliable etc, then was shocked to hear about generally poor warranty periods.

If so reliable, then why such poor warranties compared to hdds?

Well guess your failure of ssd shows me why.

Its possible you may of got unlucky however.

I have a Vertex 60g one, seems ok so far....only few months old though.

Does the hard drive still work? Pick up in BIOS etc.

Maybe it's just a Windows problem.

Unless it dies!? I certainly am not happy and do not have time to be dealing with re-doing my entire system at the moment.

Mine was OS only. Lasted 4 months. And now G.Skill won't e-mail me back.

What are the procedures for flashing the bios?

Because I've never used an SSD before I can't be certain it's actually dead, but it sure seems like it.

SSD are still using what is volatile Memory I would never store important data on SSD or purchase a SSD because of this if you want reliable HD get current rugged Spinning HD or wait for LASER Raid ARRAY Grid Solid State

You are completely wrong.

RAM is one example of volatile memory.

SSD's use flash, it's not volatile (RAM disks excluded)

That would mean that if you take your SSD out of your system you would loose all your data
SSD is not volatile.

Good luck with G.Skill Support. It's literally like pulling teeth. I had to wait nearly a week to get a "Ok to rma" deal..

You have to download, and fill out a form and email it to them, then it takes about a week... Then you've gotta pay for shipping. Mine was a DDr2 @ 1066 not a SSD..

SSD does use volatile memory as cache, as much as 128mb i think.
Hard drives does too, so if you activate write cache (recomended only with ups) they are at same situation as SSD

I don't store data on them, just programs.

How can I flash bios to it?
