Microsoft said Friday that some "in-place" upgrades from Windows Vista to the new may take some users over 20 hours to complete.

Makes me glad I have the full version more and more, also makes me a bit disappointed in Microsoft as it also shows Windows 7 still needs alot of work. Reminds me of the sleep bug that is currently plaguing older hardware (even some newer) where Windows will not enter/resume from sleep correctly.

The test setup for the 20 hour install was like 40+ applications, 650GB of data and it was on like a Pentium 4 with a gig of ram. All the reasonable upgrades were completed in like 2 hours. It's a total non-issue.

Well I upgraded from Vista just fine. Only took close to 30 mins, which I didn't mind at all. Everything was intact and runs better than ever. I usually do clean installs, but I had what I wanted installed, and organized to the point I was very happy with it.

The only thing I had to do was put my taskbar shortcuts back on. Not much of a problem imo.

I did a clean install from Vista as I also deleted a dual boot I had with one of the earlier builds of Windows 7, so I can't really comment on an in place upgrade. All I know is that I have issues with the sleep mode and that MSI needs to release a new BIOS update for my motherboard (according to people on the MSI forums who have obtained the current beta 3.6 bios it fixes the sleep/suspend issues).

I blew away my Vista and installed Win7 RC 7100 fresh. Everything is working like a charm. I didn't use nforce chipset drivers since everything is detected fine and running fine. Took like 15mins to install overall. I've used the upgrade method and didn't feel like waiting forever.

Win 7 is the only MS OS to date that upgrades properly. Have run multiple Win7 upgrades from Vista in testing and all good. If you are trying to run a Vista system on a P4 with 1Gb ram then you get what you deserve.

They just want as many users to get the full version as possible -- it's marketing.

So true! Who the hell uses up to 650GB on their Win drives? With that amount of data, you can expect it to take long. And of course a test machine with a P4 and 1GB of RAM doesn't help either.

But some must have something to whine about.

To be honest I also did a clean install. I hate the idea of having a new OS without a fresh clean. EVEN IF I have to reinstall everything unfortunately. Hopefully I don't change OS that often.

I did upgrade from vista 64 to win7 64 took less than 2 hours. Everything is working out great. Only thing I had to do was disable "animate minimizing and maximizing windows" because there was a aero delay on that.

Question: I assume you can do an in-place upgrade from a full-install disk, right? I want to upgrade what I have in place, but want the full version of the OS ready just in case, so I'm not buying the upgrade disk...

Still needs a lot of work?

Oh please. You shouldn't be doing upgrades anyway.
