After seeing that 870, all I've got to say is: I'd hit it

 

Seen a few reviews already and the i5 is a real monster in games. Wowwy willikers

Exciting stuff...wonder how the Pentium will perform?

I'd go for a 1366/x58 + i7 940 before I dished out on an 1156/P55 + i7 870. The 860 is more reasonable price/performance wise (the whole point of 1156 after all) and tempting though.

 

newegg has a bundle deal for a gigabyte p55 but i can not find it on the site anywhere else unless i click the comb link.

I was feeling quite bad before I read that part

And even when those i5's can be clocked to 4GHz or that i7 870 can be overclocked to 4,1 so can i7 920...

And it seems that Phenom 2's are still competing with C2Q's with it's price range.

 

The 870 has a silly price, an i920 platform will be much cheaper, so cant see anyone going for it. The 860 will be the one to look at..

 

the 750 is quite tempting, but the 860 gets such a better score in benchmarks(vantage, 06), after all thats the only reason i'de be upgrading.

i think im wait and get the 860 when i have the cash for it, or after i get my 300 series card.

well, if you plan on going SLI/CF it only support 8x/8x/4x...(for tri)

i herd the EVGA board is going to have 16x/16x.

 

I was looking at the evga FTW board on frys.com and it is 229 usd but I have 280 left in the budget and I need a cooler as well,was hoping the MSI gd80 would be about 200 usd as in hilberts review than I would have enough for a decent cooler and my budget must include shipping on the mobo and the cooler.

Now the evga ftw has mounting holes for the 775 coolers which i have a zalma cnps9500
but I do not think that cooler will cut it if i OC to around 3.8 to 4.1

I also would like to grab a can of prmer and black spray paint and paint the inside of my antec 900.

 

Hilbert you came to the exact same conclusion I came to on Saturday when I could've picked up an i5 750 and P55 board myself. All things considered I found about a $50 difference between going i5 and with my i7, and that was only due to my opting for 12 GB of memory versus the 8 GB of the P55 platform. I was certainly excited to see them for sale prior to release but the fact came down to it that I wanted the capability the X58 brought me, as well as the possible upgrade path to i9 should I be so inclined. Again, it's simply that as prices stand today, especially here Stateside, that I see little reason to go with the i5, or even i7 860, as that would be more expensive than going with the i7 920 and it would get me less.

I'm glad to see I made a good decision and am anxious to get it completed and ready for overclocking.
