Rumour: FREEDOM FOR THE PS3 AT LAST!!! -

I've been waiting since the Neoarchean era for a PS3 mod chip/custom firmware/unlock spell/whatever!
I loathe using my original discs and some of them are special edition discs so if if they were damaged I could never find another to buy again. Hopefully IF this chip really does exist it does more than just play backups.

it would be nice to be able to play my ps2 games on the ps3, but i am guessing it would be emulated because the new ps3's don't have the chip like the launch ntsc ps3 does which = crap compatibility and bugs when running ps2 games
also there is the worry that it is going to screw around with your online account...

Don't hold your breath. Even the PS3s which used to have PS2 emulation did it because they had one of the two chips (the Emotion Engine or Graphics Synthesizer, I forget which) and the other half was emulated. The original PS3s had both the EE and GS on one chip like the slim PS2s do.
That was a super sleazy move which Sony pulled. Right now I finally have a moment's rest and I wanted to play some old PS2 DDR game for fun and I can't without having to hook up my PS2, rubbish!

Well Sony had no choice with the removal of the hardware PS2 emulation, they were being horribly outsold by MS, and had to get the price down somehow.
Its not a cheap affair to backup PS3 games though, BluRay blanks aint that cheap, and Dual Layer ones were about £10-15 last i looked, a bad burn or two, and it would be cheaper to buy the game again.
May be cheaper in the US though.

It looks crap on PS2 and PS3, the emulators look alot better.
Running at 1920x1080, with high levels of AF and AA, i had Tekken4 looking really nice on mine, framerate was only 20-30fps but my CPU is getting on a bit now.

IIRC at the time cutting out the EE+GS saved them something like $4 per chip, I'd rather be charged $4 and have backward compatibility!
Now that the PS3 costs a fraction of what it used to make, what's their new excuse? They just want to keep selling slim PS2s.
As for the blanks, they're down to $7 each in spindles here, beats paying $100 for a BD if my original breaks! Readers are $70-$80 now for the el-cheapo ones, hopefully in a few months a decent burner will be in the ~$150 range.

By "look like crap" I'll assume you're stretching out the original 640x480 resolution to 1080p with black bars on the sides. What do you expect? Magic? Play it on a 640x480 TV or something that scales well. Also, you do realize there is a filtering option for older games, right?

If you play games online though, this is kind of useless.

Yes, it will be a chip installed in your brain it and communicates wirelessly with your xbox 360. Every time your 360 fails it will send signals to your brain so you will hear laughing. In other words it will keep laughing at you until you wish you got a PS3 instead of a 4th 360. What I'm trying to say is, don't post useless crap.
