Question AMD Phenom™ II X4 Processor 945 95W worth the upgrade? Go Intel? - 08-05-2009, 09:08 | posts: 964 | Location: West Chester, PA | User is Offline

I'm currently running a Phenom X4 9500. This CPU has horrible gaming performance due to the TLB bug or just the chip itself. Is the AMD Phenom™ II X4 Processor 945 95W worth the upgrade? Due to my motherboard restrictions I must use a 95W chip. Should I ditch the the mobo for a AMD 125W AM3 or maybe an Intel? I'm looking to spend less than $600.00 if I go this route. Any suggestions?

If you're willing to spend closer to the $600 go with an i7 setup. You can get a cpu, mobo, and ram between $550-$600. If you're looking to spend $450 or less, you can get a X4 955, mobo , and ram for that price. Either rig will increase your gaming performance. The intel setup is better overall but it's more expensive. Your choice.

I'd just save the money and go 945, but since you said u're willing to spend less than $600, you get go 955 BE right?

The motherboard is fine, don't see any reason to upgrade other than that.

The XFX 750a is limited to CPU's with TDP at or below 95w. Unfortunately, the 955 exceeds that. It is at least 125w. The only high-end Phenom II x4 currently in AMD's stable with a 95w TDP is the new version of the 945. It is not a black edition, however.
