Quote:
There's more to 64-bit computing than just more addressable memory, but it's certainly a key factor—and one reason the PCs coming into PCMag Labs are increasingly running 64-bit Vista. But these systems have 4GB or 6GB of memory, and although you may or may not notice the performance boost in everyday computing or gaming, things like Photoshop or video editing usually feel much snappier with more RAM. But how much faster? I decided to find out.

Kingston sells what is unquestionably the biggest, most expensive, craziest memory kit on the market today: the HyperXKHX12800D3K3/12GX, a 12GB kit that consists of three 4GB sticks of 1,600-MHz DDR3 HyperX DIMMs. It lists for $1,400, but Newegg.com currently lists it for just $1,199.99—a bargain, right? The newest, densest memory modules are always super-expensive; expect this kit to spiral down to merely excessive levels in the next few months. Kingston explains that the sheer density of the memory modules—not their fast, but hardly exhilarating, 1,600-MHz speed—accounts for the cost.

The PCMark Vantage and Cinebench scores don't reflect a big range here. In fact, the CSX kit does slightly worse on both—which makes sense, as there's half as much memory there? And Cinebench is a CPU-intensive test that doesn't really touch on memory. I find the 3DMark Vantage and gaming scores more interesting. 3DMark Vantage is the latest, DirectX 10–only test from Futuremark. As with the company's previous tests, it's not an actual game and does not necessarily stress the system the way a game would. On the other hand, it's far more forward-looking than most games on the market today, and uses graphics techniques and levels of detail you don't commonly see in PC games.

The CSX kit takes the entry-level run by storm, but the kits draw relatively comparable performance at the extreme levels. And on the game tests, especially World in Conflict, faster memory proves markedly more important than more memory. This makes intuitive sense: There's only so much information a game tries to throw into memory, either on the graphics card or on the system. Once everything's loaded, faster is better.

In the end, if you're gaming get the fastest kit you can afford. If you're running a server or workstation, where sheer size is most important, the appeal of ultra-dense modules like those from Kingston is clear. And if you can afford that kit—well,

Eh? Why would they even bother posting the framerate gain (yes one (1)) of Crysis? Its even worse at the bottom where it shaves off ONE second!
This kit is useless! Stick to 4-6GB of 1600Mhz DDR3 for like $100.

If you can get the 2000mhz out of memory, then it's like the old Memorex picture of the guy in the chair getting blown away by his system. The machine flies in ways that make the mind bend.

Edit:

Like this...

I'd love high density chips like that but when I can get six 2GB 'high-end' parts for $400ish I see little reason in paying for the $800-1000 premium just to reduce the number of modules. After all, by the time I would likely be interested in popping up to 24-32GB I'd be talking about a new platform anyway.

Well me personally it might make a good addition to the e-peen but, it has SLOWER Timing @9-9-9-27 and shows no benefit over a say a 2000 Mhz kit from Patriot at 1/10th the price. Maybe later if I decide I need 16GB instead of 8.

Keerist...I can' even count all the different OS's I've used. All the way from SCO Xenix to Win 7. For some reason I just could never feel natural with the way the Mac interface worked. It just wasn't intuitive to me.
