Default Problems with self built computer - 06-14-2009, 17:19 | posts: 7

Hello all, first post ever on this fourm

Anyway down to business, i have a custom built PC, first one ever, the build went with very few problems and i had it up and running in a matter of a few days.

The specs of my pc are:
CPU - intel q6600
Motherboard - Asus P5QL pro
RAM - 4GB OCZ ram
PSU - 600watt OCZ stealthstream
GPU (This is the problem area) - GTX 260
Hard drive - Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB

The problem is with my GPU, when i first built it i had a 9800GTX+ but when i installed the drivers i would experience a black screen but windows was fine and loaded up in the background as i could hear it, and also it would provide me with the lowest res and 4 bit colour. So i came to the conclusion that it was the PSU so this is when i changed it to the 600watt OCZ stealthstream, and i no longer had a black screen but i was still presented with a low bit colour and res. I then bought a 4850HD to see if it was a Nivida problem, but then the same problem persisted and then i traded this for the GTX260 for one last try and the problem keeps persisting. I tried my old card from my old PC a 7300GS card, and this worked without problems! i rebooted my pc the other day to see if it was a software problem, and the problems keep coming back so i deffo know it is a hardware problem, any ideas? could be the motherboard as i did get it from Ebay.

I have screenshots that i will post in about 10 minutes to show u the screen problems.

Thanks for reading guys!

Thanks for reply, but not a PSU problem due to the fact it has happened to three seperate cards and the 4850HD is not that power hungry and this card is well within its limits for all three 3 cards.

I have had similar problems before, did you install the driver in normal Windows mode? if uninstall drivers, go into safe mode and reinstall drivers and see if that helps. Sometimes graphics drivers need to be installed from safe mode.

take out the video card and use onboard video. When in windows, install the driver software for whatever card you are using and then put the card back in?

Only problem is the P5QL Pro has no onboard video so that is out. The ASUS support page for the board is here, just select which operating system you're using and it has everything you need right there.

I think you're having a network card driver issue as NDIS is a network driver. Try to remove and reinstall.

An old card works, but new cards don't (except with "generic" drivers ). Update the motherboard BIOS.

What's the point running 32-bit and having 4 GB of RAM?

We're trying to help you out for one. You won't get the benefits of 4GB in a 32 bit OS, it'll read as 2.75 to 3.75 and no higher. If you want 4GB to show as 4GB, you'll need a 64 bit OS.

Point is what bp9801 pointed out below and the fact that I just spotted it now. I was assuming you were running Vista64.

Usually for a 512 MB VRAM, it'll list as 3.25 GB left.
