iPhone 3GS is confirmed - Launches June 18th in US -
06-08-2009, 21:14
Well it has been confirmed, but to be honest I am totally underwhelmed by the specifications. OS 3.0 looks to give much more to current users imo.

Specs:
7.2Mbps HSDPA
3MP Camera - No freaking flash!
Video Recording up to 30fps- Jailbreak anyone?
Built-in compass
Nike + Support
New battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use
New voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes
Fingerprint resistive coating
16gb and 32gb versions
New contract pricing as follows:
$199 - 16gb
$299 - 32gb
Upgrades / mid term contract:
$299 - 3G
$399 - 3GS 16gb
$499 - 3GS 32gb

First advert here:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/v...ts-not-really/
EDIT>
Got some information for UK users:
O2 are confirmed as the sole contractors for the new iPhone. They will support tethering and MMS from 19th June, for a premium.
Tethering Bolt On - £14.98 for 3gb and £29.36 for 10GB - Jailbreak anyone?
Upgrades - Up to £184.98 for 16gb and £274.23 for 32gb depending on contract.
Tariff prices are much cheaper - £29.38 and £34.26 on 18 months, so no 2 year deals.

I really do not know why a lot of people like the iPhone that much. Of course by no means i am saying it is a bad phone but i just cant bring myself to actually use one on daily basis. Plus my S.o.n.y.E.r.i.c.s.s.o.n does the same features (just no apps) as the iPhone does.

I don't have an iPhone, but from what I seen, it's a personal portable multimedia device. You can listen to music, watch movies, go online, and make phone calls. I think that most people like them so much. From what I heard is that it does everything great EXCEPT making phone calls. Ironic isn't it?

Well, my girlfriends phone has been working quite well considering the amount of calls I get every day. I have never heard any of my friends having problems making a call either.
Personally been waiting for the new version, but now not so sure it is worth the money. It is quite tempting to simply buy the 3G version for £99 and get 3.0 with all new features. "2x faster" might be relevant for PC's, but for a mobile phone (which I never ever thought of working slow in the first place) it does not seem to be as important.
the 7.2mbps - is this for UK/o2 network too, or just parts of US?

Well, not every phone looks completely different each year, look at Sony ********, they all look-alike for many years now, with minor changes to the keyboard.
Its the stuff that is inside is thats important, and in this case (unless 7.2mbps will be available in UK), 3GS does not live up to the hype (OLED screen especially).

I would love to get an iPhone 3G S ... that is if there was a legit way to unlock it after I get one so I can travel with it.
I know you can get them in Hong Kong without the locking since all phones in HKG are unlocked upon selling time but it's quite the expensive.

yes, very true.
also the 3G could ALWAYS record video, Apple simply didn't bring out the software to do so. People who have jailbroken their 3G's can record decent quality videos with an application

Is this jailbreaking still needed to unluck full potential of the device ?

Don't quote me on it, but as far as I know - yes.
Only downside is you have to wait for jailbreakers to release updates, rather than automatic ones from apple.
I'm really town between the 3G and 3GS.... My brain says 3G but my heart says "come on, shell out an extra £80 for +8GB and extras". Thinking about it, its not THAT much of an extra. I just want o2 to confirm regarding 7.2mbps speeds and whether it will be available on their network.
