This week the Radeon HD 4890 was released and as our reference article showed it has a lot of overclocking potential really it has a lot of headroom there which could results in 10 better performance...

Hardware Cunnucks got their chip to 1Ghz (I don't know if they have the same "stable" as Hilbert does), and this was with stock cooler.

The amount this card can overclock on a stock cooler has me really excited for the technology. I can't wait to see what some people can do with an aftermarket or water cooling, let alone some uber cold liquids.

Not sure on the 4890, but in my experience FurMark is not enough to check for stability on 4800 series cards. I found test 1 & 2 in 3Dmark 06 to be the first to crash on my X2 if the core clocks are too high. FurMark will literally pass 30MHz higher than 3Dmark will. And yes, I renamed the FurMark.exe. Vantage has never crashed on me no matter what I do. I'm not really sure what makes 3Dmark 06 so hard either.

FurMark is WAY too synthetic. I always test overclocks in Test Drive Unlimited and CounterStrike:Source. These two are the most sensitive to overclocks.
TDU tends to crash or lockup very fast if OC is too high and CS:S tends to artifact (small dots all around or black vertical stripe on the left). If that works, you're good to go.

I think you guys miss the point here a little. Furmark is very handy to use to define the overclock. With that application running in a window and rivatuner next to it, you can gradually increase clock and memory frequency realtime and on the fly.

For me that works out really well and is a time saver. Running 3DMark or a game each time after a frequency change .. is just not my thing. Everybody has his/her own preferences.

But do whatever rocks your boat of course

Great review Hilbert, I use rivatuner as well. I find so much potential in the HD4890 that I might buy one for my next system.

I don't overclock my stuff often, but this method definitely beats gradually overclocking and then running a test application after every increase, imo. Very smart.

Of course, when you get into or close to the "danger zone", running another form of stability checker is certainly helpful as well.

Is Furmark more sensitive to artifacts than the hairy cube in ATITool?
