Default A reminder on cost vs performance DDR3 memory - 03-01-2009, 05:55 | posts: 3 | Location: inside the moon

I just ordered me G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 recently, for 105$ from newegg.

While reading the reviews I was reminded to step back sometimes. Someone made a post: "runs well at 8-8-8-21 at 1440mhz with 1.55v also". The memory runs stock at 9-9-9-24 and is $90+ cheaper than most the other 6GB packs. I wanted to get a 4GB pack of mushkin because the timings were a lot better, but again that was $150 and 2GB less..

I guess I just wanted to remind everyone to think backwards sometimes it can save you money.

(Oh yeah, plus the shipping was free ^_^)

no... it's just that G.skill owns, great/good enough performance + great prices that not even the mighty corsair recognizes.

glad you like your new ram, but why get triple channel ram on an AM3 board?

Sadly G.Skill is heavily overpriced here, so have to stick with Patriots (G.Skill is 20% more $$$)
Maybe someday, somewhere...

Had to RMA a Gskill 2 GB stick. Support is pretty much non-existant.. it's your responsibility to do everything and then ... wait...

however after I mailed my memory, i received a new one in about 1.5 weeks later. Lifetime warranty so I can't complain.

I would def recommend them to anyone.

Yes, G-Skill owns, I use to run all Crucial ram, then switched to G-Skill on one of my last builds, and have stayed with them ever since (great price + performance ratio).

G.Skill are making some nice stuff at an affordable price right now.
I'm looking at G.Skill's ECO 2x2GB PC3-12800 1600Mhz DDR3 kits.
Can't see it in stock in any online shops at the moment... well I've got
a week or two until I take the plunge. I do like the look of these due to
their low power needs & overclocking potential.

I'm about to order/get the following within 2 weeks:-
CPU = AMD Phenom 2 Quad-Core AM3-965 Black Edition. (C3 revision).
MOBO = GIGABYTE GA-790FXTA-UD5. (For the new tech really USB3 & SATA3)
HSF = Scythe Mugen 2-HSF. (Seems the best for the job)

I just haven't made my mind up on the ram yet because if I choose
wisely I could possibly get.. Gulp 8 Gigs of the stuff!
But I need to find out if it's possible to dual channel four sticks with
the 965BE ? (me I.. erm. I know not right now).
I've just started to do my research. I know the C3 revision of the 965 has a
more stable memory controller that allows it to use the 1T command rate
over 4 sticks, just not sure about the ‘Dual Channel‘ option.
Is it possible? Or do I have to stick with 2x 2GB sticks? (Must do more searching)

Anyway these sticks seem to be really good value
I found some info on them, which I’ll share with the following links.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tech Connect Magazine

G.Skill readies the ECO series DDR3 memory kits
http://www.**********.info/comments....=30267&catid=2

(The above hyperlink is censored for some reason that I'm unaware of)
(If you must go there look at the underscores above note the letters .- )
(they sit under & use them in place of the above hyperlinks ********** . )

G.Skill has now revealed the first products in its new ECO memory line,
six dual channel memory kits for Intel Lynnfield-based systems
(AM3 PCs should work great with these too).
Coming only in 2 x 2GB configurations, the ECO kits feature modules that
operate at 1.35V - less compared to other Lynnfield kits (1.65V) and
JEDEC-standard DDR3 memory (1.5V), and produce 16% lower temperatures.

The ECO kits are set to become available 'soon' and feature the following
specs:

- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-10600 | 1333 MHz | 9-9-9-24 (latencies) | 1.35V
- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-10600 | 1333 MHz | 8-8-8-24 | 1.35V
- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-10600 | 1333 MHz | 7-7-7-21 | 1.35V
- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-12800 | 1600 MHz | 9-9-9-24 | 1.35V
- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-12800 | 1600 MHz | 8-8-8-24 | 1.35V
- 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-12800 | 1600 MHz | 7-8-7-24 | 1.35V

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

These really aren't too shabby by any stretch of the imagination. Just
look at the electricity requirement... Wow that means they’ll run cool, bonus!
I reckon they look good too, though that's not important but the overclockability
is stunning. With Google I found an Xtreme Systems' Forum thread on them:-
G.Skill 2x2GB PC3-12800 1600Mhz-787 F3-12800CL7D 4GBECO!

In this thread some guys are testing the qUwrap out of them. Really interesting results.
They got up to the following speed/latencies.

Max "SuperPi 32M" stable with 1.64v on bios and air is 2125Mhz.
4 GB - 2125Mhz - Cas. 6-9-6-28-88 - 1t - 1.64v

The UK price from MemoryC.com for a 4GB kit is £99.83 !!!!
(Two kits is a possibility for me.. Meaning 8Gigs.. lol)

There is a full review @ Fudzilla G.Skill ECO 1600 PC3 12800 review test
Just thought I’d share this new stuff due to its low power usage, Overclockability
and price. Now I have to find out if they’re any good to go into my next rig & to
find out when some shop will have them in stock. Just a shame G.Skills website
is down at the moment.

A decent performance option at a good price point that is often overlooked is the PNY XLR8 DDR3 1600 ram. I read many reviews on that RAM before picking it up for my system, and I haven't been sorry. Good price for performance RAM! It may not overclock as high as some of the rest, but it handles tight timings well and was at a good price.

Cost vs performance. Thats a funny one, just upgraded the memory in my laptop to 16GB for £60 plus the 8GB will probably sell for £30.

Cant remember the last time i paid over £100 for some memory.
