Default Falling Capacitors - 12-11-2008, 23:23 | posts: 15 | Location: Canada

So.. i opened my case today and i heard a small bouncing sound. I looked for a bit and found a small capacitor which had fallen off my motherboard. I was like What!! nooo!... anywho i've contacted gigabyte but their taking a while to reply so i wanted to know what you guys think. Will a fallen off capacitor hurt my pc.. it all seems to be running fine.

Specs:
Corair VX450
Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H
AMD Athlon X2 5000+
Scythe Mini Ninja
Antec Mini P180

no vid card in the pci express slot.

The capacitor fell off right beside the top pci slot just under where it says pcb made in china. it was one of the smallest capacitors on my board and on it is written:
AP8 (could be a B)
10
10v

its got a small black piece attached to the bottom and two little, wires i take it, sticking out from the bottom. Its a quarter blueishgreen on the top.

Heres a pic:

I had this happen to a video card once. I played dumb and just told the RMA it simply stopped working. In a week i had a replacement. I wouldn't admit I cause physical damage to the motherboard when talking to Gigabyte, that would make an RMA unlikely. Don't include the loose capacitor when you mail it back either.

they told me that i should show the picture to the rma department and they would replace (they will prolly refurb it) the board.. but i need my pc. i cant just send my mobo in. i was looking at pictures i took about a week earlier and found that the capacitor wasnt attached during that picture either.. i remember when i heard the sound i was touching my hsf and im guessing the capacitor was stuck in the fins or something..

does anybody know weather my board will be fine without this capacitor.. cause i really dont want to rma

Impossible for anyone to say. Where did it come from? It was designed into the board for a reason. Don't roll the dice. Send it back, better safe than sorry.
