Intel Core i7 920 and Core i7 965 review [Guru3D] -
11-02-2008, 21:30
Intel today launches their Core i7 products and x58 motherboard chipset Core i7 as in their 7th architectural generation. A name that will catch on quickly and you'll get used to it just as quickly...

Cheers Hilbert. Really good info. These articles have cemented my belief that it'll only be worth adopting the new platform after a die shrink revision comes out and prices on the mobo, CPU and DDR3 drop.

Well I'm not upgrading so soon, this system plays everything I throw at it. I'll wait till I can't play anything at my resolution anymore. These CPU's seem nice in the review, but no point in upgrading yet imo.

This is one bandwagon that I'm jumping on. I guess I have a few weeks to give my wife foot rubs and kiss ass so that she won't bitch too much when she sees the credit card bill.

Great work Hilbert. I'm sure that was a real pain and I want to thank you for your efforts. I just ran across this though and would like some input:
Quote:
|
Apparently, Intel is not so happy that buyers are purchasing inexpensive yet highly overclockable CPUs instead of the higher priced and faster models. To put a stop to the practice, Intel has ensured that only the $1,000 high-end model will operate beyond the TDP barrier of 130 W (110 A). The less expensive Core i7 versions—the 920 and 940—will begin throttling back their clock speeds once they reach this threshold. Sadly, it looks like the days in which a $150 CPU is able to reach the performance of a $1,000 processor are over—at least for now. While small tweaks are still possible, major performance increases through overclocking are no longer an option.

Looks like AMD needs a lot of catching up to do. Even with the rumored speed increase of their new models they probably cannot come near the i7.

the review itself says that a lot of those games are not multi-core aware... it's not the NEWEST game, but it WOULD have been nice to see what Supreme Commander could do to/with it...
edit: BUT, don't get me wrong... i've been F5ing multiple times a day looking for any more word than just taunting by review sites saying "ha-ha, i have an i7 mobo!" .. ironic they may be the last ones to post reviews...
thank you VERY much for the benchmarks.
oh, and maybe an x264 (build 999) test would have been nice, too? omg! i've never felt so selfish in comments about a product i've looked forward to as much as i have the i7... D:

Excellent review, well done again
The performance boost over the 8400 in gaming (especailly SLI tests) is insane.
Shame about the CPU's being locked down though.

So that article from Tom's was accurate? I'm not a suck-up but I trust Hilbert's reviews far more than those on that website.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. The floodgates have been released and I'm sure we'll be inundated with enough data to keep us busy for quite a while. Hilbert's secondary review regarding the multi-GPU performance is one that every other site I've perused this evening has skipped. It is also the most interesting.
I was under the impression initially that the Nehalems weren't going to be much of an improvement over the current Core 2's in gaming. Little did I know that it was because the GPU's were the culprit. These new chips are going to be future-proof for a decent while because current graphics solutions, for the most part, can't take full advantage of them.

Add 150€ or more and that's the price you have to pay here in Finland (Core i7 920 maksaa muuten 322€ Verkkokauppa.comissa).

Really hope that prices will drop... Cheapest i7 mobo was 290€ @ Verkkokauppa.
It's possible to save 100€ and get some "Cheap" 150€ ram kit but dont want to bottleneck new system with slow ram... And I forgot to included CPU cooler to that price...
