Exclamation XP wont install. Help! - 09-05-2008, 12:09 | posts: 288 | Location: North East, England

Hi,

I've been trying to set up a duel boot with vista and XP but it dosn't work.

Right I create a partition in vista after shrinking my main partition.
boot to XP CD
Format partition
Installs all files without error

restarts but I'm presented only with a flashing cursor (like a cmd prompt) that i cant type into.

always gets stuck here never any further.

Any help appreciated

Dave

PS ive had it installed on this laptop before with no issues.

I think you have the wrong partition active, can you still boot into Vista?

Vista is still there i just use the repair startup from the Vista Disc. think it fixes a corrupt boot sector. but all works fine after that.

When you install xp after Vista you confuse the computer's booting system so its not a corruption on your hard drive. Follow the steps outlined here.

EDIT : Go to page 4 and start at the Boot from Vista Dvd point.

If you have probs getting into xp after that on your dual boot system, use a partition manager prog (eg Acronis) to make sure you haven't got a hidden partition and the vista partition is active.
