I no longer recommed updating your Bios, info I recieved today leads me to believe that there is a very good chance that the cards will never be right, new game testing in crossfire shows then wiping out operating system after operating system. Unless you want to fight with these cards for the rest of their life, return them and go green. (god it kills me to say that) sorry but thats just the way it is.

    UPDATED 8/26

    These Bios are final!

Problems seen after flash are, issues installing CCC, powerplay not using 2D clocks, artifacts, no crossfire, fan problems.
It just seems CCC can have problems adjusting to a new GPU clock and voltage settings. If you have any strange behavior delete drivers, ACE folder and CCC. After restart install driver 8.520.0.0 and CCC 8.8

Dual monitors and powerplay, there is a known issue with powerplay and dual monitors, it can not change the memory clocks smoothly, If you have issues you will need a bios with overdive memory clocks at full speed.

Using these steps may prevent the need to reinstall drivers and CCC
    1. Make sure Overdrive is off before you start
    2. After flashing delete your ACE folder before restarting.
    3. Crossfire users, make sure you are not crossfired while flashing with different clocks. It might be a good idea to delete CCC before the flash on these systems.
    4. Vista users be sure to right click the install box and install as admin. (A good idea for installing all programs)
    5. Double check the info in you XML's after you install or enable Overdrive.(Adjust clock and voltage settings to match the Bios as needed)

These new clocks work and install very good.
    625@993@1.123V boot clock, 190/500@1.046v 2D, 500/750@1.084 3D-Low, 660/1050@1.158 (small voltage bump)

8/26 Fan Curve, in a case with good air flow and vented GPU exhaust air

While vista's TV is running powerplay is smooth

    All new as of 8/18/08

Download the flash tool "Winflash" along with your bios, The program couldn't be more simple, close any open programs, launch Winflash in windows, Load bios into winflash, press program, count to 10, done.

Info for backing up your current Bios can be found here

This BIOS works very well all "stuttering" of the Fan Speed% at ~55C and lower has disappeared and 0 artifacts after >5mins. Thank you Bretware

I like your new fan curve settings, it works nice.

    Thanks

As this is a bios update, does this imply that the fan speeds will be intelligently controlled outside of the operating system as well? I'm not so much interested in the overclocking aspect of this Bios (performance in games is solid enough for now :p), but rather if I'll be able to reinstall XP without having my card idle at 80C or higher during the process. From a cold boot, my card hits 80C by the time I boot into Windows...

Do these bios work with the 4850s that have aftermarket coolers on them?

I'm wondering if this card paired with your bios would be a good combination for keeping the card ice cool.

I also have dual 120mm fans on the side of my case right where the video card is, so I'm thinking this might be overkill in the end lol.

Otherwise, I'm cool with getting a stock Sapphire 4850 with the extra fan you recommend.

It certainly wouldn't hurt, the fans will only ramp with relative temp increases, so it will be very quite with that HS until you apply load. Follow the instructions carefully (making a back up of your "original" BIOS) and flash back if you don't like it after some benching :nerd:.

If an aftermarket cooler, cools the card below 45C, you will see fan drop out.
While it's not really a problem, some don't like it.
If you have an aftermarket cooler you may want a custom fan curve.
If you get an aftermarket coolers and need help with a fan curve let me know. Set a 65% manual fan and send me idle temps and max temps under load.
    Good luck

Quick question. I am planning on getting a Visiontek 4850 locally this weekend and was wondering if after flashing with Bret's appropriate bios, is it still necessary to even bother with any profiles? This will be my first ATI card since the 9800XT.

    Thanks

No, you won't need to use any profiles as the fan speed will change automatically when the temps increase/decrease.

Can you make "Core Upper limit" to 800mhz for Diamond bios? And why low 3D dettings not work for Catalyst 8.8?
    Thanks

I recommend making your own bios if you want to go any further, and your 3D-L clocks are not working because CCC is not installed correctly.

    Good luck

I tried to modificate your bios (up upper limit) but isn't work. GPU-Z say that i have unknown video cart and CCC dint't work too...

    >and your 3D-L clocks are not working because CCC is not installed correctly

    I need to re-install Catalyst 8.8?

    Thanks
