Its impressive but i would much rather have a fast single card because SLI and i presume crossfire as well have many many short comings.

Just gourgeous card , im sold. I know wich one will be my next upgrade this time .
Great review as always Hilbert , very well done. The Nvidia 280GTX just got raped . I am anxiously waiting for the release of this card and counting the days.
This is the stuff that get me really excited about new hardware. Amazing card.
Time to let go of my old Ultras finally.

Let's see 2 4870X2's in crossfire
Seriously though if this card is anywhere near the price of the 280, Nvidia are in deep trouble in the high end market.

The FPS graph on the Mass Effect page states the score for a GTX 260, unlike the rest (with a GTX 280). Is this a typo, or was the benchmark run with a GTX 260?

That indeed is a 260 as the 280's review samples already where returned to NVIDIA. NV has arranged a new 280 for long term loan, so that will be updated asap.

Before we dive into the preview, we need to mention that there is one restriction we got from AMD. We can use any benchmark we want, yet are limited to a small number (four games) considering this is a preview. A second note that we must make is that this is an early beta engineering test-sample, the power saving features are disabled on these boards meaning that IDLE wattage and even peak wattage will be off by a good number.
|
dont you think this paragraph should be in BOLD? its VERY crusial people Read this about the BETA engineer card cause most of them just read the graphics from the bechmarks!!!

e.g. stop doing that.

because are available?!
no seriously, maybe add a "beta" label over the becmarks or something, the finall product you said your self could be more powerfull and hell lot more power hungry.
to avoid fast-wrong assumptions thats all.

Ah okay, good to hear.
The graphics front always seems to heat up when both manufacturers push out their latest and greatest. Hopefully something powerful (and cheap) enough to run Crysis with all the bells and whistles is right around the corner...

Just a quick Q, how the funk does 2x 4870s in crossfire get over double the FPS of one 4870 on the COD4 benchmarks??? surely crossfire introduces a slight bottleneck due to the communication between cards?

Communication between chips has been improved since 3870x2. The new bridge chip would appear to eliminate any bottleneck

Yeah I wondered the same thing and came to the conclusion it is the drivers.
So the 4870 results where done with the press-driver available at that time. The Crossfire test was done with newer 8.7 drivers and the X2 again had a new driver.
ATI has been working extremely hard on COD4 lately, and it is exactly that game that shows it. CF scaling is amazing in this game. But it seems that the final 8.7 driver offers slightly better COD4 overall performance.
