Default Help with a graphics memory issue? - 07-01-2008, 03:28 | posts: 3

I've been getting an error reguarding having "negative" graphics memory when trying to run a few older games. I read up on the issue and found out that it is due to the games not being able to recognize 2gig+ amounts combined shared system memory, and dedicated video memory on the card.

I have Vista (x64) Ultimate with 4 gigs or RAM, and a video card with 768mb of memory. Vista is automatically assigning and additional 1791mb of shared system memory, resulting in this 2gig limit issue. I was directed here by someone who was helping me try to find a work-around for this issue, that suggested there might be a way to reduce the amount of memory being assigned with Riva tuner, but I have no idea how to go about doing that.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This has been a very frustrating problem I've been getting for a long time, and the list of affected games is just growing. Thanks for any help in advance.

Your understanding of memory allocation is incorrect. Do more homework. (hint: BIOS assigns)

RT uses very little memory now. The only way to decrease more memory is to not use it.

I'm speaking of the Shared memory "Vista" assigns to the graphics system when using a PCI-E video card (Known as Shared system memory). I don't know what you're talking about. unless you're referring to AGP, which I don't have. My problem lies in the memory Vista is taking from overall system memory, and assigning for use by the graphics system. I was trying to find out if this program is capable of reducing the memory assigned as "Shared system memory" Not my physical RAM, or the actual physical memory on the card.

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/6982/ssmuy8.jpg If I'm not making sense, the lower circled "Shared system memory" Which isn't physical memory, it's memory allocated from the system memory for use with the graphics, that is what I want to reduce not remove the functionality of "Physical" memory. It's entirely possible that I'm wrong about what "is" controlling the allocation of this memory, I read a post by a mod on one of these game's sites that it was controlled by Vista. If it's not, the fact still remains that I need to know if this amount can be adjusted by Riva tuner, regardless of what is controlling it.

Btw, I have checked and rechecked BIOS there aren't any settings to adjust this, and yes my BIOS are fully unlocked by the jumper on the board.
