x48 is basiclly the same as x38 so yes it supports ddr2 
x48 just "officially" supports 1600 fsb/ memory

no they both support ddr2 and ddr3 
Its upto the MB designers to decide to put either DDR3 or DDR2 Slots/controllers on the board.

Asus has P35 X38 X48 DDR2 / DDR3 versions
XXXX Formula = DDR2
XXXX Extreme = DDR3
most of the time its like that.
And I think other manufactures have DDR2 versions out too.

the only diff between x38 and x48 is FSB support X48 is a true 1600Mhz fsb chip-set X38 can overclock to 1600Mhz but its native 1333 Fsb and x48 uses DDR3 only according to Intel's web sight!
