Ping Issues -
03-01-2008, 23:34
Recently i have noticed that my ping in counterstrike has more than doubled.
It occasionally fluctuates to what it should be but is very high for the most part.
I have Verizon dsl.
So, what is wrong here and how do i fix it?

If you've not changed anything on your side of the isp (anything inside of your home) then call up verizon and demand that they look into it. It could be a lot of things, could be an increase in interleaving depth on your phone line if your dsl is instable or verizon are having traffic issues.
Can you post a tracert to the server and also one to 'ati.amd.com' (minus quotes).

Did the ping increase happen after you started using the verizon equipment? Well if it did you know what to do, dont use it.
If you can do a tracert to both the server and ati.amd.com it'll show us where the problem maybe, or whether or not there are instabilities with your DSL connection.
- In windows, press the Windows key and R (or go to start > run).
- Then in the run box, type cmd.
- Up opens the command window, type in 'tracert ati.amd.com' and press enter.
- Allow the tracert to run, when it ends right click in the window and click on 'Select All' and then copy it and post here (to copy press ENTER once all has been selected.

and also try this 2 commands in command line:
netstat (to see if there are some open connections ..malwares ip not being redirected to your local host but to its website)
ping www. your internet service provider.com -n 30 (or put 90 to be sure to see if its a connection problem and if theres any packet loss at all, if so contact your isp and tell them about it)
mine line is rather lame, i get packetloss time to time and there is nothing they can do...which sucks in games (lag etc...but the most ****edup thing is that my ping stays the same when it lags), :S... anyway they're building fiberoptics on my street, so all i have to do is to wait for like *crosses fingers* 2-3 months to get it @ home

Yeah that looks like a router or isp problem imo, revert to previous hardware..
Lol at fibre, it'll be FTTC.

Fibre To The Curb.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_x

Basically, Exchange > Fibre link > Cabinet at the end of a road for example > then 'coax' (basically on cable for TV, and a phone line for you internet, using xDSL).

I did the ping thingy and my pings range from 31 to 84 and there is no loss
Also this problem started happening a couple months after we replaced the original hardware

Meh, could be port blocking down to isp. And again I'll say it try other hardware?
To me it looks like hardware as the first few hops have a very high ping, hop 2 should be 35-40ms in the worst case.
If your on wifi then obviously fix signal strength or get on ethernet.

Verizon DSL runs through the BT infastructure, and as most of the UK know, BT's infastructure is old and practically outdated. (basically its ****e)
Also, if it is a line problem, good luck in getting it fixed. Verizon wont be able to fix it because the wires under ground are owned by BT. You'll have to complain to Verizon, who'll then have to let BT know of the error, and they rarely do anything about it unless its affecting one of thier own direct customers.
Virgin Media has its problems, but id definatly reccomend switching over to Cable Broadband. ADSL in the UK is pants, especially running through BT's poor excuse for a service.

Verizon DSL is in the US, thats nowhere near the British isles, so your quite litterally talking rubbish (not to offend at all, mind).
FYI: BTw system its self is ok, aslong as you stick to an entanet resseller or you go for LLU, LLU is best though.
VM sucks more than BT, atleast BT itself doesnt restrict the speed when you download a small file lol thus making ADSL great in the UK, it just heavily depends on who you get the service from.

Utter brainfart, i was thinking of a different UK ISP i wasnt thinking haha, been at work all night havent had any sleep.
Actually, VM is far superior. VM's whole infastructure is fibre optic, only coax from the greenbox to the house, where as BT still use coax and copper wiring all over the country as their backbone.
Restrictions only apply to the top 3% of heavy users also between 6pm and 9pm, otherwise you can use as much bandwidth as you like.
Who you get the service from doesnt matter, because all ADSL runs through BT's network, no matter what ISP you subscribe to, its all owned by BT. Even VM's ADSL runs through BT's network, which leaves VM's cable broadband service at a much faster and higher standard.
BT's outdated copper backbone is absolutely dire compared to the fibre backbone of VM.

It could be the router/modem or isp or yet line problems, but it looks like a router thing as he had it fine previously.

BTw infrastructure maybe outdated but atleast its not shot in both legs and crippled by traffic management and over capacity. Not all of the isps run through BTw at all, e.g. LLU providers such as Be* and Sky, but there are the resellers who do a great deal more than you seem to realise.
