Default Should I Upgrade to 6400+ ? - 12-14-2007, 16:02 | posts: 4 | Location: philadelphia, PA | User is Offline

sorry in advance if these are some noobish inqueries, but i gotta learn somewhere.

I currently have brisbane 5000+, and recently was offered a killer deal on a 6400+ black edition. i can only afford it if i dont need to upgrade my mobo or anything though. actually, i do plan on getting a solid after market hsf too. now, i do know my mobo is already compatible with the 6000+ aswell, because HP uses it in some of their other models too. my question is, will my mobo, which is currently running a 5000+, and runs a 6000+ on other models, accept the 6400+ cleanly too? and, my comp runs 667mhz ddr2 ram, does the 6400+ need 800mhz?

also, is there anything else that goes into making a cpu swap? like, for example how with a graphics card you unistall the drivers first, or do you just put the new one in and boot up?

First you should ask yourself why you need a new cpu...I don't think you need another amd cpu to play games that much better, save your money

HP? Wtf. We build our own PCs here at the Guru of 3D. Dump that proprietary mobo and get a new mobo and keep your current CPU and OC.

I mean seriously. If you at least have AwardBIOS, dump me your BIOS so I can unlock HTT/FSB and all that jazz in the BIOS to see how far you can OC on that HP board.

Ok, I see some potential in your BIOS.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...dlc=en&lang=en

I took a look and did see some interesting hidden settings.

I see the following menus hidden: Advanced BIOS Features, Advanced Chipset Features, Power Management Setup, PnP/PCI Configs, and Integrated Peripherals.

What's in the menus?

Advanced Chipset Features

Advanced BIOS Features

Power Management Setup

PnP/PCI Configs

WARNING: I'm making NO guarantees that this modded BIOS will work correctly. In the event that it kills your motherboard and/or your entire PC, I will NOT be held responsible!

Try at your own risk!
http://rapidshare.com/files/77529787/sp35110.rar.html

Flashing tool, original BIOS, and modded BIOS included in the rar.

To be safe, have a hot flash handy, or be prepared to spend money on a new motherboard.

516MOD.ROM = modded BIOS
516.ROM = original.

Make sure that the BIOS is for your motherboard model first!

If it does flash correctly, and your motherboard boots, and the BIOS works, you can find all the unlocked options in Power->Power Management Options, and you will see HTT (CPU Frequency), LDR Multi (K8<->NB HT Speed), and Memory options, and much more.

Note that the BIOS I modded is for the following board:
ECS MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2)

Do not even attempt to flash if you know that it's not your board.

I've also modded the ECS MCP61PM-AM (Gateway PC):
http://rapidshare.com/files/77543380/ECSMOD.BIN.html

The one above this one is for the ECS MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2, HP)

The Gateway one is probably not correct for your board, but I think it has a higher chance of working if it was flashed on a correct board, because it had no trouble unhiding things at all, and the menus were nice and clean.

Again, I'm making no guarantees about any of these BIOSes working. So again, all at your own risk.

king, Just purchased a Compaq pc w. the ECS MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2) MB. I don't like the restriction of only being able to make one set of recovery disks so i've been looking into cloning the drive OR trying to activate the nvidia raid in the bios which i cant get to. Will the modded bios give access to this feature? TIA4 any info.

Sorry folks, I didnt set out to hijack the thread & change the topic. Just looking for some answers.

BTW: What if I flashed an equivalent bios from award to replace the Compaq Award bios? OR should I just start another topic?

Can i Bios lock out a CPU based on the nanometers size? Cause I'm about to nab a 6400+ but it of course is 90nm and my 4800+ is 65 nm and I have a feeling if HP could have locked this out in Bios they definitely would.

Guessing the results were not good. He probably has to wait for his new MOBO to arrive before answering.

HP has a lot of info. on this board on their site. They explain how to clear the BIOS password and CMOS (whatever that is) but being too inexperienced to have a recovery plan prevents me from fiddling with this thing. Not to mention that I don't even know if these steps are needed to OC the PCU.

modded BIOS seems to work and Power setting is now visible, but it seems it is very unstable. Some of menu keeps changing. Not sure how stable it is...

I have made some change, didn't try OC'ing as yet..just enable the on board video.. as it was disabled..

I flashed it back using correct HP Compaq BIOS and it seems like that the new setting that i made using the modded BIOS stayed.

Will try OC'ing and update you guys.

Thanks.

'Will try OC'ing and update you guys'.

Good luck. Did you just open the mod file and run it and then flash the BIOS back to the original? I know very little about mobo stuff; things most people would take for granted or take as 'implied knowledge' I probably don't know.

Hey Luke Warm...

I had a good look at the BIOS setting, especially for the OC'ing part but I was not able to find the clock multiplier..

There were only FSB setting that you can change even in the modded BIOS.

It could have been one of the menu that it kept on changing.

Will have to this weekend that will try OC'ing after putting better cooling into the system

I have the motherboard that you posted the modded bios for but when i try to flash it says "Onboard Bios Not Award Bios!"
My computers model number is a6242n. Any ideas on a solution? The main reason i wanted to flash it was because 64bit windows vista is only recognizes 3.86gb of my ram and not all 4gb.
Thank in advance,
joel

Hey Guys, I have this mobo in my HP, a A6223W with a AMD 64 X2 5200+ @ 2.6GHZ. I've been thinking about downloading the unlocked bios for my rig because if I can I would like to OC the 5200+ and my ATI Radeon HD2400Pro. The gpu is from VisionTek. Before I attempt this though, what kind of OC's are predicted for this CPU/GPU setup? Is it worth the hassle to OC my rig?
