Default Dual booting VS and XP need to remove XP - 12-09-2007, 16:53 | posts: 721 | Location: Illinois | User is Offline

Hello all,
I'm dual booting Vista and XP on separate partitions on the same drive and I want to know how I would get rid of XP?
Do I just delete the windows files on the XP partition? I'm wondering if this would mess up the boot loader?

Remove XP from an XP/Vista dual boot
Alright I removed XP from the bootloader.
But the problem is that all my games are on this partition and I need to move them to the vista partition and merge both partitions. can this be done?
I wasn't looking froward to wiping clean my drive and reinstalling everything again.

It's very easy to do with a boot disk.....BartPE, MiniPE, could try a Linux live disk....

Well I have a Ubuntu Disc so I'll go the Linux way. Now I'll just have to figure out exactly how to do this....

You can merge partitions using software like Paragons Partition Manager, but that will not magically make your XP software run on Vista. All the information kept in the registry is not going to move nor are local user files going to migrate.

Migrating to Vista using Windows Easy Transfer

You can make backups of files found on the system partition like save game in My Docs and other files found under the use profile(s). You can also make a backup of the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and then manually pick out the software and import each one, one by one. Test each time you import something to make sure it is working under Vista. Do NOT import the entire backup.

I know that, the games are all installed on vista but because I formatted my drive in half I didn't have the room on my Vista partition and they had to go on the XP partition.

I'm using Acronis Disk Director but when I try and merge it tells me The selected partitions cannot me merged...urgg
