X1950 Pro AGP Driver Display Issues -
11-10-2007, 00:55
I recently bought a HIS x1950 pro agp 512 mb card and a new PSU to go with it. I upgraded from a nvidia 6800. When I installed the x1950 and tried to install the drivers, I got a "zero display error", and everything else installed. I unwittingly then tried to install some different drivers to get better performance, and they also gave me the zero diplay error and just messed up my system. So I reformatted thinking that it would solve everything, but it didn't. Now windows runs fine without the ATI drivers (but obviously can't play any games), but when I install the ati drivers everything gets messed up. When I just install the drivers through windows (via the new hardware wizard), but DON'T install the CCC or anything else, I restart windows and the computer goes throught the bios post and it shows the windows loading screen, but before the login screen it just goes black and restarts or just sits there doing nothing (but I can get into safe mode). If I install both the drivers and the ATI software, I can load windows but everything is in the lowest resolution and 4-bit color. When I go into the ATI CCC it doesn't recognize my display. Trying to set a higher resolution or color depth doesn't work, it always reverts to the low-res. This happens with all of the drivers i have tried (ones from the disk, 7.1s downloaded from ati, and Omegas).
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

I don't want to jump the gun or anything, but if I were you, I would consider a RMA... Though there are a few more things we can try before you come to that conclusion. Have you tried to use DNA-ATi drivers? Also, when you try new drivers, do you run a driver cleaner program to ensure all old files have been removed so there are no further conflicts with a new driver?

I don't think its a hardware problem. The first time I installed the drivers it restarted and I played swat 4 and a couple other game. They seemed a little bit slow, but still very playable. I am not using driver cleaner on these because I have seen some posts that say that driver cleaner may be linked with the zero display error. I will try the DNA drivers and driver cleaner and hopefully those will work.

Yeah, use the cleaner after you run the uninstall program for the troubled drivers. Then install with the DNA-ATi drivers.

Tried the cleaner and the dna drivers and it didn't work. The problem is that it doesn't recognize my display. When I go into my DNA display settings it says display not found. Any other ideas?

Hmm, very strange... Never had a recognition problem like this. I'm not sure what your next course of action should be, anyone got any ideas?

are you getting some kind of message indicating that you have a non-vga device or driver, or unknown device?
i ran into this when i first tried to install an x1950pro 512mb card...
i think you need to try to get the system to locate or identify a windows standard vga display driver first, BEFORE you try to install the ati drivers.
may have something to do with the fact that the card has only two dva outputs and an s-video output, and windblows doesn't know what kind of reference driver to apply to the card at first?
gl! :-)

I got it to work by disabling some feature in smartgart (a couple pci read and write features I think) and using omega 7.10.
Thanks for your help!

Could you please post the SMARTGART settings you are using to solve your
problem as I have the same problem with HIS 1650pro AGP.
I have tried every driver under the sun. Changed PSU. Clean Install. BIOS updates. VIA Drivers. Driver Cleaner. Reg Cleaner.
I just cannot get this card to run properly in AGPx8 mode.
AGPx4 is fine.
PCI mode is fine and scores higher than AGPx4 on 3D Mark.
But AGPx8 just crashes during any games with "Out of Range" message on my TFT.
System runs fine doing everything else from browsing to MPEG encoding.

and you never will in that board with an agp radeon. 4xagp is your stable limit in a via chipset regardless what specs via has had pasted on thier agp chipsets for years. any other chipset will work brilliantly at 8x agp with that card i promise you.
