G92 now GeForce 8800 GT, coming in two flavors
by Cyril Kowaliski — 10:21 AM on September 28, 2007

Earlier this month, the rumor mill suggested Nvidia's upcoming G92 graphics processor would arrive on a card dubbed the GeForce 8700 GTS. Now, however, the rumor mill has ground to a halt and changed direction. VR-Zone reports Nvidia has renamed the upcoming card GeForce 8800 GT, which the firm intends to offer in two flavors.

According to VR-Zone, the cheaper version of the GeForce 8800 GT will come with 256MB of memory and will be priced at $199, while the other will have 512MB of RAM and will launch at a pricier $249. Both versions will be nine inches (22.9 cm) long, carry memory of the GDDR3 type, and offer performance somewhere between that of the GeForce 8600 GTS and GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB.

These GeForce 8800 GT cards should face off against RV670-based offerings AMD is reportedly prepping for a mid-November launch at $229-299. The AMD cards are expected to feature graphics processors based on 55nm process technology with Shader Model 4.1 and PCI Express 2.0 support. In light of AMD's plans, VR-Zone says Nvidia may opt to strike first by pulling the G92 launch forward to early November

given the amount of memory (256/512) as opposed to that of the GTS (320/640) does that mean the 8800GT will have 256-bit memory?

From what I am seeing and hearing is that yes it will come in 256mb and 512mb versions. The only thing is that it has 64 stream processors, half of the 8800GTX, were as the ATI RV670 appears to have a full 320 stream processors, the same as the 2900XT. ATI looks like they may take the crown in the midrange department, which is good since we need more competition out there in order to get the best out of the companies and keep everyone on their toes!!!

But, then again the 8600 has 32 processors and the 2600 has 120 stream processors and the 8600 still kicks it butt more so. So we will have to see.

Hopefully ATI will take the mid-range crown because these cards are sounding kinda iffy.

"Somewhere between the 8600GTS and 8800GTS"? That's an ocean-sized gap there. The possibilities are endless.

If this has 256bit memory and 10.1 compatibility, may just replace my 7950 GT with it. Well, only if it's a 65nm part with reduced power consumption. Otherwise I will wait for an all new rig to go DX10.

because nv counts their SPs differently compared to how ATI does it. 320 ati stream processors isn't equal to 128 nv stream processors.

Correct! ATI counts everyone seperately vs Nvidia counts 2 as one if I remember correctly.

Even so, 128 stream processors from nVidia would only equal 256 of ATI's SPs, yet the nVidia product stills beats the 320 SP ATI product.

Yep, Nvidia has been serving up some $%^ whoopin's for a while now against ATI, and I don't even think they are breaking a sweat.

Might the ATI HD 2900 Pro not be faster? Having 320 stream processing units and 512 to 1024 MB of GDDR3 Ram. And it costs 230$ at the moment - this price will surely drop a bit until November.

Hopefully it will not be as bugy as the other 8800s.
