I've found that Orthos gives higher temps than Prime 95 so I would try to get my temps down. My X2 3800+ @ 2.7GHz runs at about 58 to 60 degrees under Orthos and about 3 degrees lower under Prime 95. I have lapped my heat spreader and heat sink, both of which were concave. Helped by nearly 10 degrees.

I wouldn't like mine to go over 55°C, i wouldn't let it go over 60°C either. What sort of heatsink are you using? I have a Zalman 9500 and it works very well, i would of preferred the 9700 but the 9500 works very well too.

If i were you, i'd bump it down to 2.6Ghz and lower the voltage. You won't get much better performance with it on 2.7Ghz then you would with 2.6Ghz, i don't think it's worth it until you can get better load temps than that .

I haven't ran Prime 95 since i got a new cooler, but i did use Everest Ultimate Edition Stability test which puts 100% load on both cores and detects errors. I ran it for a couple of hours with no errors (or the test stops) and the max temperature was 47°C with the highest RPM setting (around 2400 RPM) and it went up to 52°C with the lowest RPM (around 1300 RPM).

I did the test before and the temps were even lower, i assume they are higher this time because of the ambient temperature.

Personally i wouldn't be happy with 60°C, that being said if it is 60°C with 100% load on both cores then general usage probably won't cause it to hit that kind of temperature but i would definitely keep an eye on it.

just my opinion but core temps are very unreliable they can be off by 5-10c and dont measure how fast you are getting rid of the heat just how much is being produced

my core temps even with water cooling go up to 63 after a few hours of stressing. but my cpu temp never goes above 50 from 42idle

btw core idle is 33

I have a Zalman 9500. My core temps are always lower than my CPU temp, right now my CPU temp is 32°C and the core temps are 26°C and 26°C, taken with the program Core Temp 0.95. It is possible the readings can be off, but you can't say either way, they could be + or - a certain amount, you just have to go with what you've got, and if my readings were 60°C, i would not be happy with that.

I know with some people it's the other way around, the core temps are always higher than the CPU temp, with me it's not. I think it's much better this way as well cause i always know my core temps are lower than my CPU temps, maybe it's good calibration, i don't know.

Another thing you might want to think about is the fans in your case. Do you have plenty of air coming in along with air exhausting out of the case. I know the 8800 series cards throw off some serious heat and with out the proper air flow your overall case temp might be too high. Hows your motherboard temps or your gpu temps?

My mobo temps is 36 -40, Gpu 43 - 71 (600core fan duty cycle 80%), i have now set the cpu to 2.5mhz 1.4v and get 42 idle and 54 under full load running p95 torture test (max heat power consumpution) on both cores, im thinking i havent given the artic silver 5 time to settle in.

60 is a bit high

i advise you two things
1-buy better cooling
2-remove your ihs like i did

i once had 65°C full load s&m (1 hour stress)
now 37°C full load (1 hour stress)

with thermaltake silentwater
