Stupid question, but what does it do?
I just ran the application, but didn't see anything or does it take a while to load up?

Ok I've been researching ATi for a long time, on again and then off again. I have a Saphire X1950 GT. It would have been much easier for me to stick with nVidia but reviews benchmarked the ATi cards as using less CPU by handling more of the video processing than nVidia cards.

Secondly I was very excited about a graphics card manufacturer finally producing something of value from the ridiculous power of their GPUs that is not completely directed at gamers - transcoding.

Now this thread is suggesting AVIVO does not touch the GPU at all????? What!!! ATi should be sued for false advertising!

The question remains:

How does ATI's software transcode video at (apparently) as much as 5x the rate of any other encoding software?

AVIVO is not the only software to take some advantage of dual core CPUs. I run VirtualDub on my Athlon X2 5600+ and the "AMD Power Monitor" indicates both cores are being utilised almost 100% each during transcoding.

Ray where are you from? Your name sounds somewhat British but English is not your native language is it?

Is the source code available for your Xcoder program? Maybe I could help develop it? Have ATi released an SDK for the AVIVO libraries or are you reverse engineering the software to determine what you can do with their libraries?

Has the open-sourcing of ATI's documentation helped you?

Is anyone aware of hardware out there - other than CPUs - that can massively speed the transcoding process? For example I found a long time ago that any normal computer can be used to brute force decrypt information by adding what I think were dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) cards to as many expansion slots as possible. I wonder if anything like this can apply to transcoding?

Less quality, much speed, period.

Anyway, I think guru3d is not much for movie encoders, look into other forums for codec gurus or GPGPU etc. I heard recently there're some experimental development of codecs trying to utilize GPU, ah not fake one of course, though I have no idea how well they work. Certainly GPU has massive calculation resource, but in exchange of maaaaasively bloooooaaated ooooooooverhead around there...

Ask ATI about it, not me The fast encoding library may produce worse quality of output video.
Current transcoding library doesn't use GPU for encoding. Only for decoding some types of video.

Lets skip it No comments.

All what I can say is this: My GUI is just GUI. It does nothing with encoding process by itself. Only pass settings to the encoding library and showing progress.

maybe we should take ati to court with a class action suite for false advertising of atixcode not using the GPU as specified on their website

Nice topics and tools here

Would it be possible to put filters in this program or use the encoder somehow in a program like avidemux ?

Below 2 frames from that MPEG2 file...

Second test, source 720x576i AVI DV, 51s.

AvivoXCode
640x480p DivX @4MBit/s -> 24s.

ATT Xcode
640x480p DivX @4MBit/s -> 1m 23s.

CCC
640x480p DivX @4MBit/s -> 1m 42s.

PS. BTW Ray, your ATT Tools ROCKS!
Hello again,

today I've run some more test (with 8.9 drivers).

And the results are the same - old ATI Avivo Video converter is almost twice faster (6min MPEG2 was converted in 3,5min vs. XCode 6min.).

The most interesting thing is while encoding in Avivo Converter my CPU usage is 80-99%, in XCode it’s always rock solid 99%.

I still need to use ATIDVCR.DLL form 7.6 driver pack (the new ones results in an error).

Ahhlon XP-M @ 2,5GHz, 2600XT AGP.

If old ATI Avivo Video converter use direct access to the coders - it will be faster than CCC and my utils. Because last ones doesn't have direct access.

The ATI converter looked slightly more blurry in those pictures, and even then, only in the dirt bike one. Can't tell a difference in the car.

Is version 0.7b the latest version of this converter?
Are there any other GUIs for ATIs xcode?

Avivo existed prior to GPGPU. Avivo Video Encoder is an add-on package that was left out of the Official 8.12 cats....even though it was included in the RC3 package. If you have an ATI graphics card, and ATI TV tuner....Avivo works flawlessly. Everyone needs to stop associating Avivo with Avivo Video Encoder. They are NOT the same thing. Avivo was intended to improve picture quality....Avivo Video Encoder, was intended to do video conversions. Unless you downloaded and installed the Avivo Video Encoder...you're still CPU bound for transcoding/converting.

Hello there,

I am trying to use atixcode.exe on cmd-line version, but when I run it, Windows reports an error message and closes the DOS-prompt window

Does anyone has a atixcode.exe with working .dll to share with me???

Thanks,

Ahh... Strammermax never came back to release it!

Ray, do you still plan to release a version with batch conversion support?

How did he modify your program? Did you give him the source code? Or he decompiled it?

Also, is the Target Bitrate of 8 the maximum allowed, or could it go higher? I have some source videos with 12.

Thanks for your handy application!

Hi Ray,

Just wanted to let you know ATI has updated its converter with recent 9.5 catalyst release.

It now has h264 hd profiles (720p and 1080p), which were announced with 8.12 but were still not there with 9.4. And your GUI does not show those profiles. Maybe a good occasion for an update of your gui ? (just a suggestion)

Also, Ati announced some optimization. I don't know if it is related or not, but I get an error when I try to select h264 ipod profile in your gui, which make it crash:
