out of interest, how would one reverse the above process to re-enable the integrity check?

Ermm a question, is this permanent? Or we have to apply next time before booting? Like on that Vista boot menu? Cos it seems that mine worked for after the 1st reboot, then won't load on the next reboot if I don't use either disablin methods. And for these kinda reason+my tuner not working even with vista64 driver, I revert back to Vista32...

I have the latest (Vista compatible) version of ATI Tray Tools and the program can't start because Vista refuses to load a low level driver. I run the bcdedit command of DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECK (shown above) to fix it. While the command executes successfully it still won't run with the same error. I've tried reboot, reinstall, running the command over and over, etc. and the driver won't install/run.

If the cursed ATI Hotkeys worked properly it wouldn't matter as I just want to be able to raise/lower gamma or brightness while in a game...

Thanks
GP

EDIT: After posting here I DL'd the latest beta drivers here and also installed a new Vista Boot Editor I found. I selected "Disable Integrity Checks" and installed as Administrator. I also unchecked Shell Integration during the install. I still got a warning about unsigned drivers but it works perfectly!

I must have scared B. Gates by posting here..

GP

additionally to doing the "bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS"-thingy, you have to make sure, that the following security updates are not installed:

KB932596
KB938979

they came out somewhere in july. so just deinstall them via "programs" in your "system manager" and make sure they are not installed automatically again (you'll have to disable automatic updates).

after that, installing non-certified drivers is possible again, and with that, ATT also works again.

One of those updates however address many issues in Vista x64, above and beyond reinforcing driver signing.

thats true. one has to keep this in mind.

but but for me, it is more important to be able to use all freeware or open-source tools/drivers i want to. its security vs. freedom. "freedom" wins this battle with me.

so, until another solution arises, i'll stick to this one.

Actually this has nothing to do with "freedom".

All MS wants with driver signing is that driver developers for their OS become identified and verified by them, so people using them know who wrote the piece of software going into their system.

Verification persee has nothing constraining your freedom. Anybody can request a certificate as a driver developer from MS for free. You'll just have to incur the hassle of verifying yourself to them, with whatever procedure there is. But there is no money cost to that.

So, you just have to get the certificate and use the SDK to sign your driver with it.

... would you do it please? Pretty please

Who told you that? Certificate costs money, a few hundreeds per year. There is no free way. And it is pretty selfish from user's side to demand a sertificate for freeware tool.

well, i didn't want to tread a discussion of princibles loose here. i was talking about my own personal freedom to use whatever tools or drivers i want on my PC. and its a fact, that most freeware or open-source stuff dont have thery drivers certified.

and, as "unwinder" already pointed out, the certificate does actually cost a few hundred dollars a year. and most freeware programmers (understandably) dont want to pay that amount of money (since they already invest many of their free time into the projects).

It seems I stepped on peoples toes...

I said that MS has no financial requirement from the developer side and this is true.

Howerver, you still need a commercial certificate signed from an authority Microsoft trusts. This costs arroubd 400$ a year and I didn't imply otherwise.

I assumed such a certificate existed from the developer for some other use. Or could be purchased. It needn't be tied to ATT only anyway. Its use is generic.

I would happily paypal 10$ for this cause. If 39 others do it too, you are set for a year. Look at how OpenVPN did it with the tap-Win32 driver.
